Beyonce Baby and Pregnancy

E! News and others have reported that Beyonce and husband, Jay-Z, welcomed baby girl Blue Ivy on Saturday via scheduled c-section at Lennox Hill Hospital in New York City.

Baby and pregnancy rumors have flying around Beyonce and partner Jay-Z's pregnancy faster than contractions in transition. We've had the rumors about her faking a pregnancy to the point where she even responded with a video talking about the rumors.  Some saying she's not even pregnant, while others say she's got a surrogate having the baby for her.

Twitter, at one point, was all fired up about Beyonce supposedly having given birth to a baby girl name Tiana May Carter.

Does anyone else remember when we didn't believe that Suri Cruise existed? What Beyonce rumors have you heard?

Positive Pregnancy Test

Taking a pregnancy test shouldn't be hard to do, but often times there are things that happen during testing that you wonder if it messes up the results of your pregnancy test.  There might also be a certain aspect of your medical history that leaves you wondering if you can trust your pregnancy test.  Here are some of the more common questions that people ask when taking a pregnancy test:

18 Weeks Pregnant on Pinterest

If you're like me, you've quickly come to love the very visual social media platform Pinterest.  Here you can "pin" (Think cork board.) different articles and photos to boards that you lay filter and separate any way you'd like to separate them. So you might think I've lost my mind - how would you accidentally announce your pregnancy via pinterest?

Well, if you're busy pinning stuff and you all of a sudden you have a board or two that's all about pregnancy, or worse, pregnancy announcements, or even gorgeous ways to document your pregnancy like the photo above from J and Paper, it starts to get obvious that something is going on.  As someone who is usually outed for doing something online to accidentally announce a pregnancy, I have some experience in letting the pregnancy news leak before I'm ready.

Are you guilty of some pregnancy pinning?  Or do you have an accidental pregnancy announcement story to share?

Twins in Pregnancy

Some people cry when they are told that they are having twins, some people stare blankly trying to take it all in, my husband and I laughed. The concept of one baby being born is fairly amazing, but two at the same time?  Whoa.  That's how I felt when I discovered that I was going to have twins.

Twins are pretty fascinating. In a look at the twin birth rate for the past 30 years, there have been some dramatic differences in how many twins are being born and what the typical twin mother looks like.  Here are some examples:

  • In 1980 one out of every 53 births was a twin.  In 2009, one out of every 30 births was a twin.  This is a rise in the twin birth rate by  76% (18.9 to 33.3 per 1,000 births) in that time period.
  • Prior to this time, from about 1915 onward, the twin birth rate was stable at about 2% of all births.
  • Twins make up 96% of all multiple births.
  • Twin birth rates increase naturally with age - the older you are, the more likely you are to have twins spontaneously.  This peaks in the 35-39 age range.  In this age range in the study, the twin birth rates climbed 100% and in women over age 40, the twin birth rate was up 200%.
  • Maternal ages are going up in all pregnancies, meaning more and more "older" mothers are giving birth.  This only accounts for about a third of the rise in twin birth rates.
  • In the 1980s assisted reproductive technologies (ART) (fertility treatments) became more common and more likely to work.  This is where the vast majority (2/3) of the rise in twins came from in all age groups.
  • A twin pregnancy is riskier for both mom and her babies.

One of the questions I get asked a lot is, how do I increase the chances that I'll have twins?  My first thought is, "Do you really want to do that?"  While having twins has been so amazing, it's also been incredibly difficult and then all those added risks and worry. Most mothers of twins say it was all worth it in the end.  So do you think you're having twins?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: How to Get Pregnant

How to Get Pregnant
Jan 3rd 2012, 08:58

About half of the people who become pregnant were planning on becoming pregnant, or even if they were planning it, they may not be taking really good care of themselves. So it's really important to plan for pregnancy before you try to get pregnant. This makes the chance of a healthy baby and pregnancy much higher than simply throwing caution and birth control to the wind.

Do you know what it takes to get pregnant? How often do you try? What should you avoid eating? Do you know what you need to do before you get pregnant? When do you ovulate? Test your preconceptional knowledge.

New Year's Baby

(These also work if you're trying to get pregnant too!)

Welcome to 2012! Okay, it's the day we all get to sit around and make New Year's resolutions, intentions or consider changing our ways in some manner. In some years, I've been tempted to say that pregnant women are immune from the discussions of diets and exercise that tend to swirl around the first day of the new year, but I'm changing my tune. There are plenty of things that pregnant women have to look forward to in the new year and plenty that they have control over. So here are some sample New Year's Intentions for pregnancy:

  • Record your pregnancy. At the beginning of your pregnancy, nine months feels like it will last forever. You believe that you have all the time in the world to take pictures of your changing body and growing belly or record your thoughts and feelings in a diary. Seize the day and start now before your pregnancy gets away from you...

  • Have a positive attitude about your pregnancy. Sometimes it's easy to get bogged down in the daily irritations of life, but add to that some of the physical discomforts of pregnancy like morning sickness or all of the late pregnancy discomforts and you can see why positive thinking might be hard, but focus! Using positive affirmations is a way to reframe these negative thoughts, deal with the issues and focus on the joys of pregnancy and your baby-to-be.

  • Plan ahead for how you will take care of yourself as well as baby. It's so easy to think ahead about how you will be preparing to take care of the baby. After all you are either making plans to keep the baby at home, go to daycare, bring someone to you, etc. And these decisions are important. What are you doing for you? Have you thought ahead to something you can do to take care of yourself? What exercise are you looking forward to? How will you get a few minutes each day to do something for yourself? These take more thought and effort when you're parenting a newborn.

  • Remember to take your vitamins and other medications. Taking a prenatal vitamin or any medication is not something I easily remember, no matter how important it is to my health. I'm trying desperately to get this one under control - I'd love your advice.

  • Eat better. Try to be specific about this one. I, for example, am pledging to add more fruits and vegetables to my diet. A pregnant friend of mine is pledging to eat ate home more often, a.k.a. less fast food. What small change can you sustain that would make your diet a healthier one?

  • Exercise more. Did you really think you could get a list like this without exercise? Seriously exercise, particularly in recent years, has been shown to be so important to your health and the health of your baby, these particularly includes your weight. So make this one you start for baby and continue for life. (I have a new newsletter to help you: Staying Fit in Pregnancy.)

What makes your list? Share it with us.
