Pregnant Woman Throwing Up
So having morning sickness seems to be what most women expect in pregnancy.  That said, I don't think you can really get what it's like to have morning sickness.  Sure, we've all thrown up.  We've all experienced feeling sick to our stomachs, perhaps even for a few days at a time with some stray illness.  None of it is like morning sickness, none of it.
That said, people want to help.  The problem is, what can they really do?  While the answer to how to help might differ from woman to woman, what NOT to do is fairly obvious.  Have you heard any of these things in your pregnancy?  What's the worst thing someone has said to you while experiencing morning sickness?

30 Week Heart Ultrasound

About 1 in every 125 babies born has congenital heart disease (CHD). Many of these are not known prior to birth and some are not known until later in life, sometimes, only after a tragedy has happened. The problem is that you can't just look at a baby and know if they have congenital heart disease. That's what happened to beautiful baby Cora. Now her mother works tirelessly towards raising awareness of congenital heart disease and pulse oximetry testing for newborns. February 7-14 is Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Week, won't you honor CHD babies everywhere by learning about what this is and what you can do to help protect little ones?

There are also a lot of families out there who have stories to tell.  Please leave a comment with a blog or page of a family you know who is sharing their story.

Pregnant Couple in Bed

Happy Valentine's Day!  Hopefully you have something special planned with the one you love.  But after the fancy dinners, dancing, and chocolates, you might feel like being physically amorous.   Yes, you can do that! Don't worry, there are very few reasons that you should avoid sex, in fact the most common reason that you should avoid sex in pregnancy is that you don't want to have sex. But if you and your partner are in the mood and haven't been told to avoid sex - enjoy yourselves!

Newborn Baby

Beyonce and JayZ are not the first parents to choose a baby name that is a color, but baby Blue Ivy might be one of the most recent ones to be well known.  Using names that have to do with colors is a fairly old practice.  In fact, some of the "oldest" names I can think of are colors, like Rose.  I also think of names that have to do with coloring, like names that mean things like fair haired (Xanthe).

I started thinking of this when someone shared that she named her kids after shades of her favorite color.  So it wouldn't be obvious to the average person that her kids' names all had something in common, but it made her happy.  Would you name your child a color name?  What color and why?

Pregnant Woman on Scale

At a recent mothers group I attended some of the women were talking about pregnancy weight gain. This isn't an uncommon topic for mother's to discuss, but what really surprised me was what the women had to say about their doctor's attitudes towards weight gain. One mom was about 8 months pregnant and she shared her story.

She had had a rough patch with morning sickness in the beginning and lost a bit of weight in the first trimester. Her doctor had told her not to worry about the weight loss. So as her appetite returned and her nausea dissipated, she began to gain weight. By 24 weeks she had gained a total of 12 pounds. Her doctor saw her chart and mooed at her. He laughed and told her to watch her weight. She thought it odd but wrote it off as a poor attempt at humor.

At her 28 week visit she had gained 3 more pounds, for a total of 15, and the doctor mooed at her again. Then he told her that she really should "learn to push the plate away." When she asked him what he expected her to gain for the pregnancy, he told her that 15 pounds was "plenty." The mom pointed out that she was up 15 from the lowest point, but only a bit over 5 pounds from her prepregnancy weight. He said it didn't matter. He explained that she was setting herself up to get "fat" and to have a ton of pregnancy complications from growing an overly large baby that she'd probably "need a c-section" to get out.

The mom said she was dumbfounded. She walked out and never went back. She called her friend and got a recommendation for a new OB/GYN. She said her new OB actually was encouraging her to eat well and to make her food count. The new office had a nutritionist on board who explained that the weight gain was actually low but on track for a healthy pregnancy. She was glad she switched OBs, but couldn't believe it when other women shared stories about being belittled for pregnancy weight gain as well.

Have you ever been belittled for your pregnancy weight gain?
