Newborn Baby on Mother's Lap in Hospital

I'm about to be a great aunt for the first time this month, or possibly even next month. It's a really fun feeling in some respects.  On Facebook the other day my niece posted about how much the baby kicked and wondered out loud about what it would be like after the pregnancy. Before I could even really think about it, I posted that she would miss the movements of the baby after she was no longer pregnant.

It was interesting to see the folks who chimed in who had kids agreeing with me, and the younger (probably kidless) crowd saying the opposite. My niece agreed she'd probably missed it, but also said it would be good to meet the baby. Definitely something anyone who has been pregnant can remember feeling.

Did you miss pregnancy? What specifically did you miss? Or were you just glad to be done, never to look back?

Pregnant Belly with a Clock

Autism occurs at the rate of about 1 out of 88 children, up from 1 out of 110 in just 2006. This number has recently been rising. This week a study was published in the journal Pediatrics that relates several maternal characteristics to the rates of autism. Basically there was a 60% higher rate of autism and other developmental delays found in mothers who were either obese, had diabetes or high blood pressure. In the United States about a third of pregnant women meet the criteria for obesity and 8.7% have diabetes, according to this study.

It is important to note that this study does not say that one causes the other, but simply that there is some association. The question then becomes what do we do about it?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: When NOT to Exercise in Pregnancy

Small Crunch on Ball

I know that I spend a lot of time talking to you about how to have a healthy pregnancy. This might mean that sometimes you have to back off of something that might be healthy for other individuals. While the many pregnant women don't get enough exercise, there are a number of women who need to avoid some, if not all, forms of exercise in pregnancy. The problem is that many of them may not even know it.

One day I had a conversation with a woman who was married to an OB/GYN. She told me that in her second pregnancy, her doctor (not her husband) had told her that she shouldn't "play tag." She told me that she now feels foolish for not understanding that he meant cut the fitness routines out. She thought he meant tag. Her husband took it to mean no sex. What's a mom to do? Ask questions.

Talk to your midwife or doctor specifically about exercise. What should you be doing, how often and what signs say you should stop.

Did your practitioner bring this up in your prenatal appointments?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Why You Should Know the Cesarean Rates at Your Hospital

Why You Should Know the Cesarean Rates at Your Hospital

Cesarean Awareness Month

More and more research is showing us that having an unnecessary cesarean is more dangerous for mom and baby. The key here being the word unnecessary. That is the hard thing to define, both in labor and out. While new research has shown us that the cesarean rates are high and that intervention in labor is probably turned to too quickly, what they agree on is that your choice of practitioners is important.

When you've chosen a practitioner, you might think that the work stops there, but many moms don't give consideration to where their practitioner works catching babies. Many hospitals have policies that may not be in line with what you are wanting and may not be on the radar of your midwife or doctor. One key statistic to know is what the cesarean rate is at your hospital.

Jill of The Unnecesarean has been advocating for transparency in maternity care for a long time. Her dedication has lead her to create a new website that will help you figure out what the local cesareans rates are at facilities near you.  Please check out her new site and share this link: CesareanRates.com

Look at the hospitals in your area. How is the cesarean rate compared to other local hospitals? How is it compared to national cesarean rates? What questions can you ask your doctor or midwife about their personal cesarean rates?
