Summer Pregnancy at the Pool

So recently we started talking about pregnancy in the summer on our Facebook page.  I thought it was a great discussion that started out being about how to stay comfortable and wound up discussing why being pregnant in the summer time was so great.  Here are some of the benefits of a summer pregnancy:

  • Flip flops
  • Fresh fruit readily available
  • No winter coats
  • Flowing dresses that are in style for everyone
  • Swimming

What makes your list as a benefit of a summer pregnancy?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: The Myth of the Midnight Ice Cream Run

Pickles and Ice Cream

One of the first things that most people hear about growing up, in relation to pregnancy, is that pregnant women eat strange things.  Not only do they eat strange things, but they often crave these odd combinations of food at unpredictable and inconvenient times. Seriously, how many sitcoms have you seen send the husband out at 2 a.m. for some ice cream and pickles?

I confess, I secretly wanted this to be me!  I wanted to be able to send my husband out on a late night, near secret mission, only to return with some yummy treat.  So once my pregnancy test was positive I waited for that craving to strike.  And I waited...  Sure, I had a few cravings, but nothing odd and certainly nothing in the middle of the night.  Heck the only thing I manage to come up with was a glass of water in my ninth month because I was too lazy to get out of bed again. And I can't even claim that I woke my husband up, well at least not with the request for water, it was my tossing and turning that kept him up.

So what about you? Did you have a midnight craving?  Did your partner make a midnight run?  Or did you just have a weird craving, even if it was during normal hours?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Fewer Iron Supplements Needed in Pregnancy

Fewer Iron Supplements Needed in Pregnancy

Prenatal Vitamins

A new Cochrane Review of iron supplementation in pregnancy says that it is possible to prevent anemia in pregnancy with intermittent iron supplementation. In plain English this means that you can take your iron supplements one to three times a week and have it be just as effective as taking it everyday according to this research.

Being anemic in pregnancy is a fairly common problem. You may not notice it because one of the main signs you notice is fatigue, a normal pregnancy symptom. Most practitioners will routinely test you for anemia in your prenatal care blood work. Standard treatment to prevent anemia used to be daily supplementation with iron. This can lead to nasty side effects like:

  • nausea
  • constipation

This study included iron supplements taken alone, in combination with a multi-vitamin and in combination with folic acid.

Do you take iron supplements?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: The Word You're Looking for is Unplanned, Not Emergency

The Word You're Looking for is Unplanned, Not Emergency

Hospital Parking Sign

I'll admit that I'm a bit picky about words, it is after all, what I do with my days.  One word gets really misused in the context of birth all the time - emergency.  I am not sure if it's a product of too much reality TV, a sense of fear or just an honest mistake, but emergency means it's rare and emergent, not unplanned.

So I'll give you a run down of how to use the word correctly in birth, particularly as it applies to cesarean section:

  • Unplanned Cesarean: This cesarean birth usually happens in the course of labor (spontaneous or induced). Something non-emergent happens, mom and baby are fine, it's just decided that a c-section is the best course of action to prevent problems.
  • Emergency Cesarean: This can happen before or after labor has started. It usually means that your baby is born within minutes, think a placental abruption, a cord prolapse, etc., not that you're having a long labor, not that you aren't dilating fast enough. There is no time to wait to do an epidural, you get general anesthesia; there is no waiting for your doctor to arrive, you get the doctor on call; and there is no take your time to talk about your options, you're being wheeled into the OR.

So, if you hear someone use the word emergency in a birth story, ask yourself to listen to what they are saying about their birth. Is the word being used correctly? Or is it used because of a sense of panic and fear that the parents felt?

While you might argue that it's just semantics, it does matter.  We tend to throw around words that create a sense of fear and panic, when none is really needed.  This leads us to believe that emergencies happen every minute in pregnancy and birth, which is simply not true.  Yes, emergencies happen, just not as often as you might be lead to believe due to the word choice.  Let's save the word emergency for when it truly is an emergency.

4 Baby Naming Controversies

Get a New Perspective on Pregnancy Photos

It used to be that you picked a name for baby, you wrote it on the birth certificate and it was done.  That was back before baby name books, choices galore and too much thought really went into a baby name. In fact, some of these controversies didn't used to be so controversial. My grandmother had a cesarean birth in 1944. When she woke up, supposedly days later, my mother was already named by my grandfather. I can't even imagine, particularly given how my husband and I differ on baby name styles.

Did you suffer through any of these controversies? Did you have your own version of baby name conflict? Tell me about it.

Pregnant Belly

If you are due in December, January or February, you may not know this but your childbirth class options are limited. Many childbirth classes end in November, and don't get started again until it might be "too late" to start them for your due date.  This, of course, means that the September, October and November classes get full quickly.

So if you haven't started looking at what your options are locally, now is the time to do it. This means figuring out who offers classes, when and where. It also means talking to the various educators and looking at the websites to figure out not only which fit into your schedule but which classes fit with your philosophy of birth.

Have you signed up yet?
