Normal Newborn Penis Intact Foreskin

Today the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) officially unveiled their new statement on circumcision of the newborn male.  Since 1999 they have backed away from routine circumcision, and as a result, the rates of newborn male circumcision has dropped. Here is the bulk of their statement:

"After a comprehensive review of the scientific evidence, the American Academy of Pediatrics found the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks, but the benefits are not great enough to recommend universal newborn circumcision. The AAP policy statement published Monday, August 27, says the final decision should still be left to parents to make in the context of their religious, ethical and cultural beliefs." (Emphasis mine.)

Groups that are opposing the statement point out that the studies that the AAP used were largely done in developing countries, and say that the results don't translate well to the US.  One thing that I thought was interesting was that there was little discussion of the ethics involved in circumcision, with the exception of saying that insurances, including medicaid, should cover this surgery if the parents choose it. Given the recent court decision to outlaw circumcision in one area of Germany it was an interesting omission. And of course, the media spin misses the part where they say they don't recommend it universally.

What are your thoughts?

Woman Cutting Hair

Let's face it, when we hear about pregnancy the first thing we think about as moms is not the pregnancy glow that the myths often talk about. While many of us enjoy the changes in our bodies, they still can make us feel awkward and not attractive. To do something about this, we might turn to salon services for some pampering. This can be a great way to help you feel better and enjoy a bit of pampering.

Some of the services that moms enjoy while pregnant can include:

If you were going to go to a salon for some pampering, what would you get done?

Pregnant Woman Packing her Hospital Bag

One of the most favored tasks of the end of pregnancy is packing a bag for the hospital. Though what you put in the bag can also be a bit of a conundrum. What if you forget something? What if you pack too much stuff? And just what do you really need? These are questions most moms ask.

So what did you really need? Did you forget anything? If so, how did you deal with it. Share with us in the comments.

Dad Inspecting Pregnant Belly

Normally you hear about women who are obsessed with pregnancy.  The truth is, sometimes the men are just as bad as the women.  A dad who suffers from being overzealous might be too involved in the pregnancy.  Perhaps he's one of the "dreaded" me who constantly refer to every pregnancy symptom as something that "we" experience rather than just the mom-to-be.

So what's the scoop in your house?  Which one of you wears the overzealous pants?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Are you a pregnancy slacker?

Are you a pregnancy slacker?

Are you a slacker Pregnant Mom

Pregnancy has become a competitive sport these days.  You're expected to follow your baby's growth week by week via pregnancy calendar, schedule hospital tours in the first trimester and interview more and more professionals to help you raise the baby from your doctor or midwife to baby shower planner and nursery decorator.  And if you don't, you're considered to be a pregnancy slacker - not fulfilling your duties as a pregnant woman.

But perhaps you've chosen the slower route for your pregnancy. Maybe you only follow the pregnancy month by month view of baby's growth. You're leaving your baby shower planning up to your best friend and (*gasp*) you've decided to do a DIY baby nursery.

The truth is you're not alone. Many women would categorize themselves as pregnancy slackers - and proud of it!  These women care just as much about their babies, they simply have a different philosophy of pregnancy.  One mom said to me that she felt anxious and worried when she tried to follow a weekly pregnancy calendar.  Instead she opted for daily pregnancy affirmations and focusing on her health and well-being - physically and mentally.

Another mom talked about decision fatigue - too many decisions to make.  This, she said, made her feel physically ill.  "I had a headache a lot and one day I realized, it was all the comparison shopping for just the right baby car seat," she explained. "I knew that I needed to conserve my mental energy for the truly important decisions about my baby's health and stop worrying over which print for the car seat fabric for which car."

Can you relate?  Do you take the slow road?

Fitness Friday: Side Stretch Twist in Pregnancy

After sitting in a chair all day, this is one exercise I could really use - the side stretch twist.  This gentle stretch can feel very powerful.  It's easy to do, even in your office chair.  (Though I recommend locking the wheels if you have them on your chair.) This can also help with round ligament pain if you're experiencing this side effect of pregnancy.

Do you think you'll enjoy the side stretch twist?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: PTSD from Giving Birth

PTSD from Giving Birth

Concentration in Labor

A recent study talked about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after giving birth.  There was a tiny statement in the document that led a media frenzy that claimed that unmedicated births caused PTSD. This is a small study of women (102) and a total of 7 mothers had PTSD. What the study said was that 80% of mothers who developed PTSD did not have medication, 5 women of 7.

My initial thought when I saw this was I wondered if the mothers actually chose to have an unmedicated birth or were forced to have an unmedicated birth because of the lack of availability of epidurals or other medications or because their labor didn't allow for it, for whatever reason. As I've worked with women who really were traumatized by birth, those who were unmedicated did NOT choose to be unmedicated. There are reasons why an epidural can't be given. Penny Simkin spoke to this thought in a blog post on Science & Sensibility for Lamaze International.

Simkin summed up my feelings nicely, "In spite of the flaws of this study, the authors offered some valuable conclusions, pointing out 'the importance of inquiring about previous pregnancy and birthing experiences and the need to identify at-risk populations and increase awareness of the disorder.' Despite the shortcomings of their study, this advice is on target, as has been confirmed over and over again in the literature on traumatic birth."

So instead of getting into the sensationalism of these articles all over the media, let's talk about how to help mothers who have PTSD, for whatever reason, after giving birth. Other research shows that moms are more likely to have symptoms of PTSD if they experienced:

  • Lack of choice for options in care
  • Perceived lack of communication from medical staff
  • Fear of unsafe care
  • Lack of continuity in providers
  • Others

Have you experienced any of these in previous experiences? Has anyone asked you about your previous pregnancy or birth experiences?
