About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Down Syndrome Awareness Month

Down Syndrome Genetics

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. So many pregnancy sites, including this one, talk about Down Syndrome in terms of prenatal diagnosis. While that is an important thing there also need to be a focus on what happens after that point. I'd like to introduce you to a great resource called Down Syndrome Pregnancy.

They offer a free e-book, called "Diagnosis to Delivery" as well as a blog, forum and other resources.  I personally think everyone should also consider reading: Your Loved One is Having a Baby with Down Syndrome

Man Helping Laboring Woman on Ball

To tell you the truth, I hear a lot of childbirth class bashing going on these days. Parents are quick to say it's not worth it or they simply aren't interested without looking to see if it's something that might actually really benefit them for their labor.

That said, there is a perfect time and place for childbirth classes, and in my opinion that would be also every single pregnancy ever. Nor before you start dissing me too, at least look at why I think childbirth classes deserve a second look.

What's your experience been? What have you heard positively or negatively about childbirth classes?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Crowdsourcing Baby Names

Crowdsourcing Baby Names

Isaac as a baby

Marissa Mayer, of Yahoo, welcomed her son on Sunday.  She tweeted that they were looking for a name. Which prompted @JeffJarvis to Tweet: "Just got a large-group email from @marissamayer. She's crowdsourcing suggestions for Baby Boy Bogue's name! How digital can you get?" MSNBC says in their piece that makes Mayer a "digital" pioneer.

I actually beg to differ, I called for a help on naming our baby in May of 1997. Yes, my crowdsourced named baby will be 15 years old in a few weeks. In fact, while digital requests for help baby naming may be new, asking for people's advice on baby naming is a very old tradition. Many people ask for and get help in naming their children, though I'd hazard a guess that it's less likely than it used to be because of the way we look at baby names now.

Your thoughts?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Cesarean Rate Unchanged, Preterm Births Drop

Cesarean Rate Unchanged, Preterm Births Drop
Oct 3rd 2012, 10:22

Newborn baby in a cocoon

This is obviously a good news, bad news report. The good news is that the preterm birth rate dropped for the fifth straight year to 11.72%. This follows many advocacy efforts from organizations like the March of Dimes and AWHONN. These efforts have caused many hospitals to rethink their policies regarding elective deliveries prior to 39 weeks and more.

The bad news is that despite advocacy efforts to reduce the cesarean rate, the rate remains unchanged at 32.8% of all births in this preliminary 2011 birth data. While we'd love to see this number drop and had hopes after a miniscule drop from the previous year of 0.1%, this is also not an increase as in many years past.

There are also other numbers from the data including a drop in teen pregnancy rates and the birth to unmarried mothers. You can read this and more from the CDC.

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Holiday Conception Guide

Holiday Conception Guide

Happy Couple

As the holidays approach, so does the seasons of the baby conception boom.  This means that there will be a lot of baby making sex going on in the next few months.  Obviously the fact that the conception rates peak indicate that most people find a way to make it happen, but I was talking to a friend recently who was exasperated at trying to get pregnant, dealing with secondary infertility and seemingly always traveling to a relatives house on the "right" days of the month for a holiday or something else.

She lamented that she and her parent just couldn't have sex in the room where she grew up. For every solution I threw out, she had a counter-argument.  It was actually a light hearted conversation, but it does hold some serious implications.

It made me realize my friend wasn't alone when I saw this from Bat Sheva Marcus:

"So what if the guest room is right next-door and the kids are all watching a video in the adjoining room? You're up to the challenge. You and your partner make a total silence pact. No noise, no moaning or groaning, no calling out names. Turn all the lights off, make the room as dark as you can and try for a completely silent tryst. It may make you smile for days."

So that begs the question, how do you do the deed if you're not at home and your ovulation prediction kit is signaling that it's the right time?
