Sad Woman

With new research coming out and scary headlines running rampant, a mother who is experiencing depression in pregnancy may not understand what's going on and often may get conflicting information from various care providers, including her doctors or midwives. The latest headlines are no exception screaming danger, but what the average media outlet fails to mention is that untreated depression in pregnancy also has consequences which can be detrimental as well. It is important that every pregnant woman have a conversation about her specifics with her practitioners, all of them, if possible, to come up with the best answer for her and her baby. Walker Karraa, MFA, MA, CD(DONA) sums it up like this:

"If you are currently pregnant and taking an SSRI, do not abruptly stop taking your medication until you talk health care provider about risks and benefits for your individual care. If you feel you may be experiencing depression or anxiety and are pregnant, you deserve help with your symptoms. Not getting help has been proven to have negative effects on a developing fetus and increases the risk of pre-term birth, lower birth weight, and postpartum depression. Discuss your symptoms with your care provider immediately. I highly recommend using the resources available at OTIS (866) 626-6847 to address your concerns and questions."

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Birth Centers as an Option for Your Birth

Water Birth - Oh it's a baby!

You may never have heard of the option of a birth center. It's a sort of middle of the road between a hospital birth and a home birth. It can be staffed with Certified Nurse Midwives, Certified Professional Midwives, doctors, etc. Not every metropolitan area has a birth center, but many women travel miles to go to a birth center. While there are no epidurals done in birth centers, there are many forms of pain relief including water, massage, etc. but also some offer forms of narcotic medications. (The latter was a surprise to me as I'm attending a birth center workshop this weekend.)

Do you have a birth center in your area?  What do you know about it? Have you used a birth center?

Birth Stories - Happy birthday, Isaac!

Your birth story is an essential part of who you are, no matter what the story entails. My kids love to hear the story of their birth, the good, the bad and the ultimate joy. It's a birthday tradition to share that story again on their birthday.

As I explained last week, I always share the birth story of my children with them on their birthdays. Isaac's birthday is today and he is fifteen years old. This story is actually told by his dad.

Have You Considered a Grandma Shower?

Grandma Hands

There is a ton of controversies that surround the traditional idea of a baby shower, let's add the grandma shower to that list. While there are certainly ways that it can be done to make it low key and not take away anything from the mother-to-be, there are still detractors.

No Choice But To Wait Until Labor To Find Out The Sex of Baby

Boy or girl?

There are people out there who aren't finding out the sex of their babies before birth.  There are also those couples who are conflicted about finding out.  Though I thought this note was interesting:

"This is my fifth child so I told myself and my husband that I didn't want to know. I just recently went in for my 18 week ultrasound and I almost had a break down and told the nurse to go ahead and let me know the sex. My little one made me keep my word by closing it's legs and not moving at all. So now I have no choice but to wait until labor..." JH

Did you and your partner decide to wait for labor?  If so, did you feel like cheating?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Nursing in Halloween Costumes

Nursing a Baby Dragon

If your little one has already arrived, you may wonder how to nurse them in their Halloween costume. Most smaller babies will have very simple costumes that don't crowd their faces. Be wary of putting on any costume that obscures your child's face, even as they get older.  Simply remove the costume that is near their face to nurse.

Planning your costume may be a bit trickier, since I haven't seen any nursing clothes as costumes. That said, you could also go as a new mom. Take your favorite nursing shirt and simply pin on various items that represent the postpartum period to you.  Perhaps: a small baby book, a diaper, a baby toy, the drawing of a clock that reads 1:00 a.m.  Be creative and have fun!

What will you be wearing as your goblin gobbles?

Let Me Out! Halloween Costume for Pregnancy

I spotted this outfit this morning at preschool - it's a great way to have a last minute costume while pregnant. While this saying might not be your favorite, you can certainly make a quick maternity t-shirt and some puffy paint to add your own.  Here are some of my ideas:
  • Let me out!
  • Due in___
  • Shake, Rattle & Roll
  • Eviction Notice (List Due Date)
  • Bun in the Oven
  • This belly is my Halloween costume.

What would your t-shirt say?
