Photographers in the Delivery Room

On a trip to the  emergency room,  they went to start an IV.  Let's just say, I'm not an easy stick.  So on try number three, a technician throws back the curtain and says, "Oh don't mind me, I'm just here to stock some stuff in the room."

I looked at her and as nicely as possible asked, "Can you please wait to do that until after I am done getting this IV?"  She looked at me like I had four heads, so I went on, "It's just that I'm having this painful procedure done and trying to concentrate on relaxing and you're distracting me...  Is there any reason you can't come back in a few minutes?"  She shrugged and left.

This quick exchanged reminded me of the many times as a doula when I'm in a labor and delivery room (LDR) and they want to stock the room.  Sometimes the timing is bad, sometimes it's not.  However, when asked, they are usually great about waiting.  You might think it odd that strangers just come into your hospital room while you're in labor for tasks like this, but, that said, I've also encountered maintenance personnel, janitors, inspectors, students and loads of others that you might not expect in the labor room.  Are you ready for the "extras" and what will you say when they come in?

Worried Mom and Pregnancy Test

Chemical pregnancies are hard to track. They happen early and maybe often, depending on which source you read. Many women think they've just had a late period. Though, if you're looking you can find them, like the mother who shares her story of a chemical pregnancy.

Sleeping Newborn Baby

Look, I know pregnancy can be a real kill joy in the whole list of don'ts, particularly when it comes to eating.  I really try very hard to keep a positive focus, but I also know that when it comes to Thanksgiving, the foods are supreme!  Who doesn't sit and actually dream of a few dishes here and there that only show up on this one day of the year?  Before you head out to eat with the family, keep this short list of Thanksgiving foods to avoid in mind.

What food will you be missing?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Kourtney Kardashian Planning for a Third Baby?

Kourtney Kardashian Planning for a Third Baby?
Nov 8th 2012, 23:10

Thinking about Pregnancy

Kourtney Kardashian is supposedly planning for a third baby, maybe? I read that article's headline and thought to myself, "So what, shouldn't she be planning it?"

Given the recent data from the CDC that shows that still about half of pregnancies are unplanned, planning sounds beneficial. Planning a pregnancy also gives you a chance to check in on your health, to make the necessary adjustments to your lifestyle and health that may need addressing. This is considered the optimal way to have a healthy baby - by planning ahead.

The problem that I find as a health educator is that most women don't understand truly who should be planning for a pregnancy. I like to keep the definition really simple.  Here are the two questions I ask women to decide if they need to have some thoughts in place around planning ahead for a baby:

  • Do you have a uterus?
  • Are you having sex?

If you meet these simple criteria, from the standpoint of focusing on mom-to-be's health, you should consider yourself to be in planning mode, even if you aren't trying to get pregnant. What this means is to think about when you do want to have babies, if you do and what you will do to prevent pregnancy if you don't want a baby.

At the very least this includes an appropriate multi-vitamin (focusing on folic acid) and having an appropriate method of birth control until you're ready to actively prepare or try for a baby. (Though remember, every birth control method has some failures, even when you do everything right. That's part of planning to have a baby simply because you're sexually active.) The CDC calls this your reproductive life plan.

What phase are you planning for actively right now?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Study Says Moms Need Two Months Sick Leave in Pregnancy

Smiling Newborn

Did you laugh when you read that headline? I certainly laughed when I wrote it. I didn't laugh because I don't believe it to be true, but I laughed because I don't know anyone in the United States who can afford to do this, short of true medical emergencies with their pregnancies. The study that we're talking about here, was done in Norway, where they have excellent parental leave policies in place. This has had to have played a part in the findings, so much so that I think for my purposes, that's the bigger story - why don't we have leave in pregnancy?

Why do pregnant women take leave?

This study showed that the further a long you were, the more likely you were to be using some leave. They also pointed out the various times in length versus commonality, so for example, while only 2% of mothers in the study took leave for depression or anxiety, their leave periods tended to be longer.

According to Moms Rising, paid time off for parents can decrease infant mortality, and yet 51% of mothers have no paid leave, while the other 49% are cobbling together various bits of leave from sick time to vacation to pooled leave (if available).

Talk to us in the comments. What was your leave availability? What did you take? What would have made your pregnancy or even merely postpartum easier or even healthier? Did your partner get any leave?

Antidepressants in Pregnancy: Don't Panic

Sad Woman

With new research coming out and scary headlines running rampant, a mother who is experiencing depression in pregnancy may not understand what's going on and often may get conflicting information from various care providers, including her doctors or midwives. The latest headlines are no exception screaming danger, but what the average media outlet fails to mention is that untreated depression in pregnancy also has consequences which can be detrimental as well. It is important that every pregnant woman have a conversation about her specifics with her practitioners, all of them, if possible, to come up with the best answer for her and her baby. Walker Karraa, MFA, MA, CD(DONA) sums it up like this:

"If you are currently pregnant and taking an SSRI, do not abruptly stop taking your medication until you talk health care provider about risks and benefits for your individual care. If you feel you may be experiencing depression or anxiety and are pregnant, you deserve help with your symptoms. Not getting help has been proven to have negative effects on a developing fetus and increases the risk of pre-term birth, lower birth weight, and postpartum depression. Discuss your symptoms with your care provider immediately. I highly recommend using the resources available at OTIS (866) 626-6847 to address your concerns and questions."
