Pregnant Woman Checking in at Hospital

The week before Thanksgiving is filled with inductions of labor.  Some of these will be for medical reasons, others for social reasons, but either way an induction increases the risks to both mom and baby.  Inducing labor is not something most people are anxious to do. But there is a guide to help you have a calmer, less stressful induction.

Ultrasound Tech Offers Advice on Gender Disappointment

22 Week Baby Girl Ultrasound

Every day lots of moms write me to share their stories of disappointment at the results of their ultrasound in regards to the sex of their baby.  This is known as gender disappointment.  While there are also many mothers who don't understand the feelings discussed, I thought that this note from an ultrasound tech, someone who deals with this on a daily basis, was particularly nice:

"I'm an ultrasound tech and I totally see so many women who feel the same exact way as you ladies every single day.  Sometimes they are pregnant with #4 or 5 only to get the same sex.  The only thing that gets you going is knowing that once you get this baby in your arms you will feel, 'Wow, I can't picture my life without you!'" -Baz

Do Baz's words comfort you?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Extra People in the Delivery Room

Photographers in the Delivery Room

On a trip to the  emergency room,  they went to start an IV.  Let's just say, I'm not an easy stick.  So on try number three, a technician throws back the curtain and says, "Oh don't mind me, I'm just here to stock some stuff in the room."

I looked at her and as nicely as possible asked, "Can you please wait to do that until after I am done getting this IV?"  She looked at me like I had four heads, so I went on, "It's just that I'm having this painful procedure done and trying to concentrate on relaxing and you're distracting me...  Is there any reason you can't come back in a few minutes?"  She shrugged and left.

This quick exchanged reminded me of the many times as a doula when I'm in a labor and delivery room (LDR) and they want to stock the room.  Sometimes the timing is bad, sometimes it's not.  However, when asked, they are usually great about waiting.  You might think it odd that strangers just come into your hospital room while you're in labor for tasks like this, but, that said, I've also encountered maintenance personnel, janitors, inspectors, students and loads of others that you might not expect in the labor room.  Are you ready for the "extras" and what will you say when they come in?

Worried Mom and Pregnancy Test

Chemical pregnancies are hard to track. They happen early and maybe often, depending on which source you read. Many women think they've just had a late period. Though, if you're looking you can find them, like the mother who shares her story of a chemical pregnancy.

Sleeping Newborn Baby

Look, I know pregnancy can be a real kill joy in the whole list of don'ts, particularly when it comes to eating.  I really try very hard to keep a positive focus, but I also know that when it comes to Thanksgiving, the foods are supreme!  Who doesn't sit and actually dream of a few dishes here and there that only show up on this one day of the year?  Before you head out to eat with the family, keep this short list of Thanksgiving foods to avoid in mind.

What food will you be missing?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Kourtney Kardashian Planning for a Third Baby?

Kourtney Kardashian Planning for a Third Baby?
Nov 8th 2012, 23:10

Thinking about Pregnancy

Kourtney Kardashian is supposedly planning for a third baby, maybe? I read that article's headline and thought to myself, "So what, shouldn't she be planning it?"

Given the recent data from the CDC that shows that still about half of pregnancies are unplanned, planning sounds beneficial. Planning a pregnancy also gives you a chance to check in on your health, to make the necessary adjustments to your lifestyle and health that may need addressing. This is considered the optimal way to have a healthy baby - by planning ahead.

The problem that I find as a health educator is that most women don't understand truly who should be planning for a pregnancy. I like to keep the definition really simple.  Here are the two questions I ask women to decide if they need to have some thoughts in place around planning ahead for a baby:

  • Do you have a uterus?
  • Are you having sex?

If you meet these simple criteria, from the standpoint of focusing on mom-to-be's health, you should consider yourself to be in planning mode, even if you aren't trying to get pregnant. What this means is to think about when you do want to have babies, if you do and what you will do to prevent pregnancy if you don't want a baby.

At the very least this includes an appropriate multi-vitamin (focusing on folic acid) and having an appropriate method of birth control until you're ready to actively prepare or try for a baby. (Though remember, every birth control method has some failures, even when you do everything right. That's part of planning to have a baby simply because you're sexually active.) The CDC calls this your reproductive life plan.

What phase are you planning for actively right now?
