Special Pregnancy Stocking Stuffer: It's a... Dec 13th 2012, 09:05 My friend is finding out today if her new baby is going to be a girl or a boy.  She's very excited about it.  Talking to her this weekend about finding out made me think about the story of a friend of mine who found if her baby was a boy or a girl during the Christmas Season. She wanted to share the news in a special way, which is something I think is very important.  So she started talking to other people and the vast majority just blurted the results of the ultrasound out to everyone.  She wanted to do something different.  In searching she found a couple of ideas related to Christmas, this excited her.  So she decided that she would write a letter from Santa to her son, he was about 5.  In the letter, Santa revealed that the son would be getting a little brother around Easter.  The little boy was so excited and surprised, and of course, after pulling the letter out of his Christmas stocking, read it to the whole room. How to Make Your Boss Laugh While Announcing a Pregnancy Dec 12th 2012, 17:05 I am luck enough to hear a lot of stories about pregnancy announcements. There is not a harder person to tell than your boss. I spend a lot of time trying to help people break the news gently and professionally.  So I had to laugh when Theresa shared this story of telling her boss about her good news: "To make my boss laugh I yelled 'Hey! I've got a baby in my uterus!' loud enough for everyone in the office to hear. The roar of laughter was priceless." Christmas Pregnancy Announcements Dec 11th 2012, 09:39 I was playing around the other day on Etsy, as I'm prone to do and I simply typed in pregnancy and Christmas.  This really cute card came up and I knew that I had to share it with you.  So I wrote to the owner of the shop, Diane, and got permission. It turns out that she does a lot of these types of greeting cards and even some ornaments. This is a great way to announce your pregnancy this Christmas or Chanukah. (Yes, she's got those too!) Christmas Birthdays and Labor Induction Dec 10th 2012, 09:21 It's that time of year when all the pregnant women start lamenting having a December birthday, particularly a birthday on Christmas Day.  (In fact, no fewer than three celebrities had babies last year on Christmas Day.)  The truth is, having a December birthday, even a birth of Christmas or Christmas Eve can be a lot of fun.  The problem comes when people let themselves get talked into believing that they should undergo potentially dangerous inductions or procedures to try to avoid having their babies born on Christmas.  So I want you to think of a few random things: If you're having your baby in the hospital, one of the reasons was probably because you could receive 24/7 medical care from a team of medical providers.  Guess what - they are open not only 24/7, but 365 days a year - even Christmas Day! Having a baby on Christmas Day means a lot fewer people in the hospital, this can mean more attention to you and your baby, if you want it. Trying to schedule an induction just before Christmas ensures a hugely busy and overworked staff because of everyone else doing the same thing.  I've personally seen women laboring in the halls or having very long wait for services like epidural anesthesia because of it. When you have a baby in the week before Christmas (with lots of other women), you've also got a crowded postpartum floor.  This means longer waits for being seen by pediatricians, getting pain medicationss, etc. Not agreeing to an induction doesn't mean that your baby will come on Christmas Day, particularly if you're not even due yet.  It simply means you're not forcing the baby to come before your baby is ready. Having an induction of labor increases the risks that you'd have a cesarean section.  Having a c-section means a longer stay in the hospital, which may mean you spend Christmas in the hospital anyway. Inductions of labor can take longer and be more painful for some women, this might mean that you're induced two days before Christmas to avoid a Christmas baby - only to have a Christmas baby because you got induced.  (True story!) Being in the hospital in a crowded induction season can mean that you have to share resources in the hospitals that are already spread thin, like the lactation consultant, breast pumps, birth certificate clerks, etc. Share in the comments reasons why you'd avoid being induced right before Christmas or other big induction holidays? CDC Offers Pregnancy & Baby Related eCards Dec 9th 2012, 19:27 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a lot of things for a variety of people. I'm pretty amazed at the wealth of information that they offer.  But when I found out that they have eCards on a variety of topics, I was floored.  Some of them are really interesting, but I thought you might enjoy the Health Pregnancy category or the Healthy Baby category. You can send these as pregnancy announcements or even to pregnant friends to give them a heads up on some aspect of safety in pregnancy or parenting.  You can see all the cards they have or even download their app for your cell phone. Hilary's Birth Dec 8th 2012, 19:41 My daughter, Hilary, turns 21 today. It's pretty amazing to me that I've got an adult daughter now. Today is a day that I reflect on her birth oh so many years ago. I'd actually been a doula for many years, attending over 70 births before my own first baby was born. I knew about birth. What would transpire over the hours of her birth would ultimately lead me to rededicate myself to the work of birth. The doctor told me, as she walked out the door, "You won't remember this tomorrow..." 21 years later I still remember even minute of it very clearly. Birth is much more than the physical act of getting a baby out of a woman's body.
