Pregnant Woman Stretching

Pregnancy is a time many moms find exercise and other healthy practices. Exercise has been shown to provide you with so many benefits during pregnancy. Moms who get physical find that they sleep better, gain weight appropriately, have fewer aches and pains and can even have shorter labors.

That sounds like a great plan, doesn't it? Who doesn't want those benefits? The problem is that pregnancy also comes with several things that tend to zap our energy and sometimes makes us feel like we're not feeling so great, particularly in terms of moving around. Some quick examples of that would be fatigue and morning sickness.

The trick is to try to get small amounts of exercise, even when you're not feeling up to full workouts. Think about parking in the back of the parking lot versus searching for the closest spot. Try to take the stairs, even for a flight or two, as opposed to an elevator. Obviously, the more you do, the more benefit you get.

What are you doing for exercise?

How many baby showers per pregnancy?

Baby Shower Group Photo There is always a lot of controversy over having a baby shower for a baby who is not your first. Some say every baby deserves a shower and others feel its greedy to have a baby shower after that first baby. What I'm talking about here is having multiple baby showers in your first pregnancy.

Some moms wind up having multiple baby showers during a single pregnancy. An example might be a friends shower and a family shower or a friends and family shower and a work shower. Have you had multiple baby showers? Have you been invited to multiple baby showers for one baby? What are your thoughts on this practice? Tacky or practical?

Newborn Nursery Full of Babies

Since 2008 the number of babies born where mom has Medicaid has jumped 19% to be about half of all the births in the United States. This can be an incredible source of data as we move forward with health care reform. We will be able to track birth outcomes, not individual births. This can tell us if having prenatal care will help improve outcomes of moms and babies who have medical coverage compared to those who do not.

More importantly it will help us look at the care moms get between pregnancies, including pregnancy spacing, and if that also improves outcomes. Ideally we'd find that the investment in maternal child health would improve outcomes, meaning fewer mothers and babies who are ill or dying from childbirth and pregnancy related problems like preterm birth and preeclampsia. In turn, the investment in the care would ideally lead to a cost savings.

One thing most aren't talking about in this context is actually the fact that if women have insurance coverage after pregnancy, they may increase the spacing between pregnancies, meaning fewer pregnancies as well as healthier pregnancies. The time between pregnancies also has a lot to do with the health of mom and baby. As many states move to expand Medicaid coverage to include women who are not pregnant, we will be able to look at these trends to see if the investment in expansion has provided this benefit.

Do you know how your state ranked in number of Medicaid births covered?

New Test Predicts Gestational Diabetes Before Pregnancy

Glucometer and Diabetes

About 4% of all pregnant women will develop gestational diabetes in pregnancy. This is typically detected in a screening done around the 28th week of pregnancy by having a mother drink a sugary drink known as Glucola and then testing her body's response to the sugar it contains. There are many severe consequences of gestational diabetes or GD. By screening and treating those who are positive, these consequences can be drastically reduced.

Now a newer test, one that can be done prior to pregnancy, looks for a hormone called adiponectin. If a woman has these lowered levels prior to pregnancy, she is at a seven times greater risk of developing gestational diabetes. This is something that could be tested for in a pre-conceptional health visit. The benefits of testing prior to pregnancy may include the ability to alter your levels prior to getting pregnant to lower your risk. The current research hasn't been done on that aspect, but it will be looked at in the future. It will also allow you and your practitioner to consider earlier and more frequent monitoring of your GD status, before the routine 28 week mark in pregnancy.

Pregnancy Wheel - Gestation Calculator

When you think of a pregnancy calculator, you probably think of a standard due date calculator. You know, one that takes the date of your last period and quickly spits out the due date. While my calculator also gives more details, like when to expect a heart beat, feeling your baby and more, I occasionally get asked for a pregnancy calculator that goes backwards - one that takes a due date and calculates a window of conception, so when you got pregnant.

It's always funny because we tend to hold these romantic views of when conception happened, it may not be that romantic moment you really thought it was. While that may not matter in the long run, it's an interesting look at how your body works.

Does it work for you?
