Genetics Chart for eye color

I will be the first to admit that my husband and I are pretty geeky when it comes to things like science and math. So when we dove head first into the gene pool of having children, we had no idea what we could expect. Would our baby look just like my husband who looked identical to his father and brother? Or would our baby look like a combination of us? Or neither?

The truth is that even after having eight kids, we got a crazy mixture of genetics that could only leaving us laughing and scratching our heads. So when we stumbled across the genetics program called 23 and Me, we were intrigued. You submit your DNA samples and they give you a bunch of data. The reports are fairly overwhelming if you're new to genetics, but there were a couple of really fun tools for parents-to-be, including the ability to link our profiles and to see what the statistical likelihood was that our kids would have a given number of genetic traits given our actual DNA, not just photos or reports. What you see above is what it said our chances were in the field of eye color. Now, here's our break down for eight kids:

  • green hazel
  • green hazel
  • brown
  • blue
  • honey hazel
  • honey hazel
  • black
  • brown hazel

Pretty neat trick huh? So, this is obviously not something that will appeal to most people. Many are happy with using other programs that combine photos or let you fill out profiles. If you're using one of those type services, tell me which ones and why in the comments. If you've already had your baby, how well did it work for you?

Lamaze Infographic What's the Deal with Cesareans?

Working with Lamaze International has taught me a lot of things, but one of the reasons that I chose to certify with them as a childbirth educator was the fact that they really want to talk about what the best evidence is to support moms and babies. They've created a lot of great tools over the years but most recently they've done the Push for Your Baby Campaign, the Healthy Birth Practices and now this infographic on cesareans.

So what do you need in a childbirth class as a participant?

Pregnancy Halloween Costume - Skeleton Fetus T-Shirt

Halloween is only a few weeks away. Being pregnant provides you with some great excuses for an awesome costume.  If you're like me, you always want to have a great costume, but run out of time or ideas.  You could simply just buy a fun t-shirt like the one above. I found this on Etsy. I think it's really unique looking and you could get away with it for Halloween or even just a regular Maternity outfit.

Making your own Halloween costume? If you want to have some time to plan for a really great pregnancy Halloween costume, you'll need to start thinking about it now. Interested in how to make a bun in the oven costume? If you have a costume you'd like to add to our gallery, you can add it here.

Lucky Mama Boobie Box

I've talked before about having a basket of treats designed for a nursing moms as a gift. The good news is that if you don't have the time or knowledge about breastfeeding, you can look at purchasing the Lucky Mama Box BoobieBox instead of making your own.

What would you include in your own, or would you just get a premade basket?

ACOG Toxic Chemicals in Pregnancy Infographic

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) released a joint statement talking about the risks of exposure to toxic chemicals when trying to get pregnant and in pregnancy. Citing sources that talk about the harm these materials can do to your body and fertility before pregnancy and those of your baby during pregnancy, they give a quick list of things you can do to try to limit exposure. This includes:

Given what I would expect form an announcement of this sort, it was a fairly simple sounding list. This makes it very practical for the average person to be able to have some control of what types of exposure you have in your every day life. That said, chemicals are around you every where. They are in your furniture, your clothes, and the items that you buy for your baby. It is impossible to completely avoid these environmental toxins, no matter how much you try. The goal here is reduction, and reduction in the way that you can get more bang for your buck. So consider how a toxin would enter your body, if you ingest it in food, it's in your body. If you slather it on your skin, it is absorbed. These may be the more intense routes of exposure and ones you should focus on.

It is also important to know about chemicals and things that you may be exposed to while working. Be sure to talk to your boss or manager about any potential harmful substances. They are required to have a list of the chemicals and sheets called Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). You can also talk to your doctor or midwife about this issue. And, moving forward, keep in mind what products you purchase for your baby from clothing to bedding, even the paint on your walls and more.

What are you doing to avoid toxic chemicals?

Vaginal Birth is Safe For Twins
Oct 3rd 2013, 09:45

Newborn Twins

A new study out talks about the safety of vaginal birth for the vast majority of twins. The main criteria for safety is whether or not the baby closest to your cervix, known as Baby A, is head down. How often Baby A is head down is something most moms have no clue, but in this study in both the planned vaginal birth group and the planned cesarean group, Baby A was head down about 96-7% of the time. Having both babies head down, while nice, is not necessary for the safety of a vaginal birth, but that was over 60% of the time. This opens up a new look for many twin moms.

One of the problems with having twins is the risks that are associated with it. Twin B, the baby furthest from the cervix, is the twin most likely to suffer if there is a problem at the time of birth. This study did confirm those findings, but found that it was the same in both groups, meaning that having a cesarean planned to protect Baby B would not be helpful.

Given the added risks of cesarean birth for most healthy moms and babies it seems that a planned vaginal birth is still the clear choice for mothers who would prefer a vaginal birth. When I was having my twins, most of the twin mothers I met in class and at the high risk doctor's visits waiting room wanted to have a vaginal birth, but many felt forced into a cesarean birth. This gives them the data to back up their preferences with their practitioners.

If you had twins, did your practitioner encourage you to have a vaginal birth?

Toddler and Mom's Pregnancy Belly

Don't judge and I won't judge you!  I swear, I'm a great mom, but honestly, being pregnant with any baby other than your first is a whole different ball game. You don't have time to nap or lay around and leisurely read baby name books. In fact, if you're anything like me, you barely had time to breathe, let alone nap. So here are some of the things that I figure out that I could "cheat" on and still have a healthy pregnancy, a happy older child and still maintain some reasonable amount of sanity.

What would you add to my 6 Tips for Lazy Second Time Moms?
