Christmas Birthdays and Labor Induction Dec 15th 2011, 09:21 It's that time of year when all the pregnant women start lamenting having a December birthday, particularly a birthday on Christmas Day.  (In fact, no fewer than three celebrities had babies last year on Christmas Day.)  The truth is, having a December birthday, even a birth of Christmas or Christmas Eve can be a lot of fun.  The problem comes when people let themselves get talked into believing that they should undergo potentially dangerous inductions or procedures to try to avoid having their babies born on Christmas.  So I want you to think of a few random things: If you're having your baby in the hospital, one of the reasons was probably because you could receive 24/7 medical care from a team of medical providers.  Guess what - they are open not only 24/7, but 365 days a year - even Christmas Day! Having a baby on Christmas Day means a lot fewer people in the hospital, this can mean more attention to you and your baby, if you want it. Trying to schedule an induction just before Christmas ensures a hugely busy and overworked staff because of everyone else doing the same thing.  I've personally seen women laboring in the halls or having very long wait for services like epidural anesthesia because of it. When you have a baby in the week before Christmas (with lots of other women), you've also got a crowded postpartum floor.  This means longer waits for being seen by pediatricians, getting pain medicationss, etc. Not agreeing to an induction doesn't mean that your baby will come on Christmas Day, particularly if you're not even due yet.  It simply means you're not forcing the baby to come before your baby is ready. Having an induction of labor increases the risks that you'd have a cesarean section.  Having a c-section means a longer stay in the hospital, which may mean you spend Christmas in the hospital anyway. Inductions of labor can take longer and be more painful for some women, this might mean that you're induced two days before Christmas to avoid a Christmas baby - only to have a Christmas baby because you got induced.  (True story!) Being in the hospital in a crowded induction season can mean that you have to share resources in the hospitals that are already spread thin, like the lactation consultant, breast pumps, birth certificate clerks, etc. Share in the comments reasons why you'd avoid being induced right before Christmas or other big induction holidays? Grossest Thing to Cure Morning Sickness Dec 14th 2011, 08:42 I've been pregnancy a lot of times, so I don't even want to begin to calculate the number of times I've experienced morning sickness (all day, all pregnancy sickness).  This means that over the years of personal experience and professional experience, I've heard a lot of remedies for morning sickness, and I've even tried my fair share of them.  As I was reading some of the things that women here had shared worked for them, I started thinking about some of the worst things I've ever had recommended. Kyla submitted this: "Eat a spoonful french mustard the yellow kind and if you don't like mustard drink some water after." Gross.  I can't say whether this works, because I couldn't even bring myself to try it.  What's the worst thing you've tried? Did it work? Special Pregnancy Stocking Stuffer: It's a... Dec 13th 2011, 09:05 My sister is finding out today if her new baby is going to be a girl or a boy.  She's very excited about it.  Talking to her this weekend about finding out made me think about the story of a friend of mine who found if her baby was a boy or a girl during the Christmas Season. She wanted to share the news in a special way, which is something I think is very important.  So she started talking to other people and the vast majority just blurted the results of the ultrasound out to everyone.  She wanted to do something different.  In searching she found a couple of ideas related to Christmas, this excited her.  So she decided that she would write a letter from Santa to her son, he was about 5.  In the letter, Santa revealed that the son would be getting a little brother around Easter.  The little boy was so excited and surprised, and of course, after pulling the letter out of his Christmas stocking, read it to the whole room. Anyone planning anything fun for when they find out? How long should you stay in the hospital after having a baby? Dec 9th 2011, 08:34 How long you stay in the hospital or birth center after having a baby is rarely up to you, your doctor or midwife, but mostly up to hospital policy and your insurance company. Some information says that maybe how long you stay after giving birth should include your opinion and the opinions of your practitioner. If you had a choice about how long you could stay would you be someone who wanted to move into the hospital? Or would you be someone who got the heck out of dodge as soon as you could? Michelle Duggar Has a Miscarriage Dec 8th 2011, 17:13 I was saddened to read about Michelle Duggar's miscarriage.  She had just announced her pregnancy a month ago.  She was into the second trimester when a routine ultrasound revealed no heart beat.  The couple has said that they will name the baby and have a funeral.  Other than saying that they were heart broken to tell the kids, there were no other details. My point here is more the comments section.  Goodness knows we've had lots of talk about the mean spirited things that people say to women in general about miscarriage and even shared our personal stories, but some of this is vicious.  I for one certainly hope she doesn't read the comments. What would you say to Michelle Duggar right now? Awkward Baby Names Dec 8th 2011, 10:40 For years, I've said, be careful what you name your baby.  I've pointed out that you need to watch their initials, you need to think of potential nicknames - basically give your child's name some due diligence.  Come on, we've all met that person that makes us think, "What were your parents doing when they named you that?"  (Even if you don't really ask that question!)
