Is Exclusive Breastfeeding Too Hard?

Group of Moms

An article by Rita Rubin caught my eye, talking about a study from Scotland that basically said women in a study reported that exclusive breastfeeding for six months was too hard. What immediately jumped out at me when I looked at the Scottish study was that it was basing this article on talking to 36 women! I could certainly find 36 women to say just about anything.

To me, what's more worrisome, is that we're having a conversation about making the recommendations more lenient because of these women's opinions. That's right, skip the medical fact because 36 women are saying breastfeeding is hard.

Guess what?  Breastfeeding can be hard, that doesn't make it not worth it. And some women don't have issues with breastfeeding and find it completely enjoyable. I love the quotes by Desirre Andrews, a doula from Colorado, in the article.

The real problem is that, rather than focusing on what is really wrong - the fact that we as a society do so much that makes breastfeeding much harder than in it has to be - we are simply looking for a way around it.  Please, let's shift the discussion to topics like increased paid maternity leave, well educated practitioners on breastfeeding issues, and many of the other Booby Traps.

So, I'll ask you, what would help you or what did help you, breastfeed for six month exclusively?

James Van Der Beek and Pregnant Wife

James Van Der Beek, former Dawson's Creek star, and wife, Kimberly, welcomed a baby boy on March 13th. Their daughter, Olivia, was born in September 2010.

Van Der Beek said on Twitter that he caught his son, meaning that as his wife birthed the baby, he was the one who received the baby into his hands. Many doctors and midwives are willing to let you help, some using something called a three handed catch, to reference the support of the practitioner. Have you considered doing this at your baby's birth?

5 Questions to Ask Before Changing Your Due Date

Pregnancy Wheel - Gestation Calculator

Once you are pregnant, you are given a due date. That due date can be calculated in many ways. It might also seem like the date isn't so important, because babies come when they want, right? While this certainly should be the case for most pregnancies, a good number of times the due date you're given really does matter and to change it willy nilly can have some disastrous effects on your baby's health.

Did your due date change in pregnancy?

Newborn Baby with Puffy Eyes

So you're due any day and you realized that St. Patrick's Day is around the corner. Are you going to choose a St. Patrick's Day inspired baby name? It might surprise you that many people actually do choose names for their baby based on what happens near the time or birth or even the conception, so why not choose a holiday inspired baby name?

If that's not the naming tradition you use, tell me a bit about how you choose a name. I find it so interesting. I know so many people who pick names out way in advance and yet our last baby took three weeks to get named...

Then again, I know that there are others out there who take a really long time to name their babies. I was just reading somewhere the other day about people who change their baby's name after birth and that number was rising. I wonder if people took more time or if they didn't name before birth if that number would drop. Most places don't require you have a name before you leave the hospital, though it's easier on them paperwork wise.

Side Stretch Twist in Pregnancy

After sitting in a chair all day, this is one exercise I could really use - the side stretch twist.  This gentle stretch can feel very powerful.  It's easy to do, even in your office chair.  (Though I recommend locking the wheels if you have them on your chair.) This can also help with round ligament pain if you're experiencing this side effect of pregnancy.

Do you think you'll enjoy the side stretch twist?

Pregnancy Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson made the news this week when she posed nude in Elle Magazine. I honestly thought we were over this topic. I remember when Demi Moore posed nude when I was pregnant with my first baby, who is now 20.  Big deal or who cares?

But back to celebrity babies! There are plenty of celebrity babies due in March, including first time mom, Hilary Duff.
