Ocho Hands On

Today, my baby is four. Our family tradition is to tell you your birth story before your birthday, so I started whispering things to her for the past 44+ hours. One of the benefits of a long labor is time to think. Most women really panic at the thought of a long labor, but honestly, I preferred it. I went to the grocery, I went to the mall, I rented a breast pump... I even went to a birthday party for a friend's 5 year old. (When I lost my mucus plug, I went home!)

So come read about Noa's birth and celebrate with us!

Baby Shower

I love a good party.  The friends, the laughter, just spending time together is what really makes it special.  Sometimes I think that we get too caught up in the lurid stories of celebrity baby showers filled with swag to remember what really matters to us.  So think about this when it comes to a baby shower - why are you there?  To spend time together as a community celebrating mom and baby.  There are plenty of ways to have a wonderful, beautiful and fun-filled baby shower without all the money.

Couple Walking in Early Labor at the Hospital

Labor is hard work, I'm sure you've heard that before. But, it's the truth. Though there is a secret I'll share for staying comfortable, labor positions are key to that comfort. Though there are many labor positions to choose from - how do you choose the right one?

You should many labor positions in your childbirth class, including labor positions that work well for pushing or even with epidurals. You can also ask other moms who have been there, what worked best for them?

If you haven't heard, this coming Monday is Labor Day in the United States, this year, from Noon - 2 p.m. in over 100 cities across the US, there will be a rally to raise awareness about birth outcomes. It's not a protest, it's only goal is to get people to take notice of the situations that birthing women face in the US. Their goal is to promote evidenced based care for women and their families in the birth experience.

"Despite the dire situation, this is not a protest," says Dawn Thompson, founder of ImprovingBirth. "It is a public awareness campaign to bring attention to the outdated practices that have been proven time and again to not be what is best for mothers and babies."

Women, men, children, everyone is welcome to participate. You can find cities from Tampa Bay Area to Elizabethtown, KY to Seattle and back.

This also kicks off Empowered Birth Awareness Week, which is traditionally beginning on the first Monday of September.

You can find out more about the National Rally for Change on Labor Day at their site or on Facebook.

Will you be participating?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: AAP Discusses Newbon Circumcision

AAP Discusses Newbon Circumcision

Normal Newborn Penis Intact Foreskin

Today the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) officially unveiled their new statement on circumcision of the newborn male.  Since 1999 they have backed away from routine circumcision, and as a result, the rates of newborn male circumcision has dropped. Here is the bulk of their statement:

"After a comprehensive review of the scientific evidence, the American Academy of Pediatrics found the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks, but the benefits are not great enough to recommend universal newborn circumcision. The AAP policy statement published Monday, August 27, says the final decision should still be left to parents to make in the context of their religious, ethical and cultural beliefs." (Emphasis mine.)

Groups that are opposing the statement point out that the studies that the AAP used were largely done in developing countries, and say that the results don't translate well to the US.  One thing that I thought was interesting was that there was little discussion of the ethics involved in circumcision, with the exception of saying that insurances, including medicaid, should cover this surgery if the parents choose it. Given the recent court decision to outlaw circumcision in one area of Germany it was an interesting omission. And of course, the media spin misses the part where they say they don't recommend it universally.

What are your thoughts?

Let's face it, when we hear about pregnancy the first thing we think about as moms is not the pregnancy glow that the myths often talk about. While many of us enjoy the changes in our bodies, they still can make us feel awkward and not attractive. To do something about this, we might turn to salon services for some pampering. This can be a great way to help you feel better and enjoy a bit of pampering.

Some of the services that moms enjoy while pregnant can include:

If you were going to go to a salon for some pampering, what would you get done?

Pregnant Woman Packing her Hospital Bag

One of the most favored tasks of the end of pregnancy is packing a bag for the hospital. Though what you put in the bag can also be a bit of a conundrum. What if you forget something? What if you pack too much stuff? And just what do you really need? These are questions most moms ask.

So what did you really need? Did you forget anything? If so, how did you deal with it. Share with us in the comments.
