Nursing a Baby Dragon

If your little one has already arrived, you may wonder how to nurse them in their Halloween costume. Most smaller babies will have very simple costumes that don't crowd their faces. Be wary of putting on any costume that obscures your child's face, even as they get older.  Simply remove the costume that is near their face to nurse.

Planning your costume may be a bit trickier, since I haven't seen any nursing clothes as costumes. That said, you could also go as a new mom. Take your favorite nursing shirt and simply pin on various items that represent the postpartum period to you.  Perhaps: a small baby book, a diaper, a baby toy, the drawing of a clock that reads 1:00 a.m.  Be creative and have fun!

What will you be wearing as your goblin gobbles?

Let Me Out! Halloween Costume for Pregnancy

I spotted this outfit this morning at preschool - it's a great way to have a last minute costume while pregnant. While this saying might not be your favorite, you can certainly make a quick maternity t-shirt and some puffy paint to add your own.  Here are some of my ideas:
  • Let me out!
  • Due in___
  • Shake, Rattle & Roll
  • Eviction Notice (List Due Date)
  • Bun in the Oven
  • This belly is my Halloween costume.

What would your t-shirt say?

Twin Pumpkin Pregnancy Announcement

A friend shared this adorable twin pregnancy announcement that she received from her daughter this week, showing two baby pumpkins inside a mommy pumpkin. I thought that was a clever idea. There are plenty of really cool Halloween ideas for pregnancy announcements.

What have you seen or done?

Surprise - You're Pregnant!

Every now and then, pregnancy sneaks up on you when you least expect it.  Here's Proud Mommy's story:

"I went to see my family physician because I was dying with flu symptoms. He asked the nurse to inject me with a strong dose of antibiotics but as he gazed over my chart noticed aunt flo was late. Nurse asked I take a pregnancy test to be safe and turns out, NO antibiotic injection for me!"

Have you had an experience like this before?

Lamaze Conference 2012

Fall is always great for me. I celebrate the birthday of the majority of my kids, I love the crisp feel to the air and it's usually the Lamaze Conference! This year the conference is in Nashville, TN. I'm busy having fun catching up with old friends, meeting new people, and learning a lot of interesting things to share when I get back. If you're interested, stop on in to Twitter and follow the hashtag #Lamaze12 there. I will be tweeting from two accounts @About_Pregnancy and (mostly) @RobinPregnancy.  Lamaze will be tweeting from @LamazeAdvocates and @LamazeOnline. Say hello!

Doctor and Woman

Pertussis, or Whopping Cough, is something that can be passed from mother to baby after birth. In fact, one study showed that 30-40% of cases of Pertussis in infant was from mom. After the 20th week of pregnancy, it is considered safe to have the Tdap version. You may not need an immunization or you may not be a good candidate. It's important to talk to your doctor or midwife about this immunization.

If you're like me, you love giving baby gifts (at baby showers, and other places). But I also really like to do fun wrapping to make the gift look really neat.  Two ways I do this: fun gift toppers and using odd things to wrap the present itself.

What do you like to do?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: SIDS: Prevention Versus Lowered Risk

SIDS: Prevention Versus Lowered Risk
Oct 24th 2012, 09:46

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has long been a mystery to scientists. We don't really know why it happens, just that apparently healthy babies between 1 month and 1 year go to sleep and don't wake up. We spend a lot of time hearing about new things that we can do, like have baby sleep on their backs, breastfeed, avoid overheating, quit smoking and others. But there are also factors that are completely out of your control, the the age of your baby, the sex and the time of year. I think this often gets overlooked and parents who child dies from SIDS are potentially left feeling like they didn't do everything that they could to help protect their child.

This is an important distinction. Some factors that you as a parent can control and some factors you simply can't. As it stands today there is no perfect predictor and no cure, only the reduction of risk factors.

My nephew, Nathan, was born 21 years ago today. He died in March of 1992 of SIDS. In April 1992, the American Academy of Pediatrics came out with the Back to Sleep Campaign. The good news for my sister was that Nathan was sleeping on his back when he died, she said she would have always felt guilty had that not been the case. But he was a boy, it was winter, he had been born prematurely and recently been ill with a respiratory infection. The bottom line: Do what you can.

What are you doing to reduce your baby's risk?

Breastfeeding Baby with Mom and Siblings

Did you know that you can usually safely nurse through pregnancy? Many moms find that they are pregnant and aren't quite ready to give up nursing their other child. The good news is that you usually don't have to give it up. You can even continue nursing both children, once the new baby is born. That's called tandem nursing.

6 Tips for Lazy Second Time Moms
Oct 22nd 2012, 09:54

Don't judge and I won't judge you!  I swear, I'm a great mom, but honestly, being pregnant with any baby other than your first is a whole different ball game. You don't have time to nap or lay around and leisurely read baby name books. In fact, if you're anything like me, you barely had time to breathe, let alone nap. So here are some of the things that I figure out that I could "cheat" on and still have a healthy pregnancy, a happy older child and still maintain some reasonable amount of sanity.

Second Baby Showers Are Tacky
Oct 20th 2012, 09:30

The question of the second baby shower is one that doesn't go away.  Some readers are very blah in how they feel about, while others have very strong feelings.  CC is one of those posters:

"I have been to far to many baby showers & I am done! Baby showers have become out of control. Not that many years ago second showers where considered tacky, tacky, tacky. ... A classy mom to be would have a get together & have friends donate to the poor, needy & sick babies of the world."

Toddler and Mom's Pregnancy Belly

Certainly there are many feelings about how to handle a second baby shower, but, despite the harsh words for second baby showers in general, I like what CC has to say about donating to others. Have you ever been to a baby shower where donations were made to charities? Tell me about them on the forum!

Pregnant Woman in a Coat

I know it's still only October, but the truth is, winter coat weather is just around the corner.  Plus, when you add pregnancy to the mix, it's not like you can just walk to the store and pick up a coat off the rack - or can you?

Some women will decide to forgo the winter coat while pregnant, particularly if they are close to their due dates and radiating heat.  Other moms will decide that they have other options for winter coats. One mom offered:

"I like layering in cooler weather even when I'm not pregnant, so I'd rather do that than buy a coat. I feel like, with multiple layers, I have more control over my body temperature, especially if I'm going in and out of the cold weather (during shopping, for example)."

Which mom are you?  What's your maternity winter coat solution?

The Five Year Pregnancy

I constantly monitor the news for pregnancy related information.  It couldn't help but catch my eye when I saw that someone called the police and reported that she'd been pregnant for five years and demanded sleeping medication. While this person probably isn't well, we certainly know she hasn't been pregnant for five years, though what woman at the end of pregnancy doesn't feel that way?

Truth be told, pregnancy is an average of 40 weeks or 9 months (Okay, 10 but who is counting?). How long did your pregnancy feel?

Pregnancy Halloween Costume - Skeleton Fetus T-Shirt

Halloween is only a few weeks away. Being pregnant provides you with some great excuses for an awesome costume.  If you're like me, you always want to have a great costume, but run out of time or ideas.  You could simply just buy a fun t-shirt like the one above. I found this on Etsy. I think it's really unique looking and you could get away with it for Halloween or even just a regular Maternity outfit.

Making your own Halloween costume? If you want to have some time to plan for a really great pregnancy Halloween costume, you'll need to start thinking about it now. Interested in how to make a bun in the oven costume? If you have a costume you'd like to add to our gallery, you can add it here.
