Mom Pushing Her Baby Out

A new study out in Obstetrics & Gynecology shows that women with increasing weight do not suffer from longer lengths of the pushing phase of labor.  Interestingly enough an increasing body mass index (BMI) was not linked to an increase in the cesarean rate either.

Baby Shower

Over the years I've fielded a lot of etiquette questions about baby showers.  But one person says that 40+ people boycotted a baby shower because it was short and served only cupcakes, among other reasons:

"The mother to be only wanted cupcakes and punch served at the baby shower, it was at 1:00 pm. This was not a case of not being able to afford the food, she makes it clear she don't want to pay for food. The poor woman that hosted the shower was clearly embarrassed. So please, mom's to be, remember to be thoughtful of your guests. They are taking time out of their busy day to honor you and your baby. One last comment, yes your guest talk, and they tell others of their experiences."

I don't know that I've ever had conversation like this with other people.  I'm more likely to talk about a weird baby shower game, but I don't know that I do a lot of comparing baby showers.  What about you?

Can you predict a cesarean with a computer?

Newborn's First Breath

There is a buzz gong around the tech sites that PrediBirth, a software package, can predict who will need a cesarean section before labor. In a study of 24 women (small study) done by the creators of the program (conflict) they use MRI images of the pelvis and baby to simulate 72 trajectories of the head through the pelvis to provide a score to indicate the likelihood of a vaginal birth.  I have a couple of concerns about this program, including the ones above, including doing MRIs on all pregnant women (cost, resources, risks, etc.). I also don't see how this program can predict the movement of the pelvis with relaxin, which is more about labor, particularly as it pertains to movement in labor.

The French researchers presented their program this week at the annual meeting of the Radiologic Society of North America.  I'd really like to see the research, but I don't have high hopes for this, because we've been trying to do this for a long time and no one has managed to do it yet for many of the reasons I've already mentioned. I will say that while I find this theory to be problematic, many moms are raving about Spinning Babies and helping your baby find the best position in the womb.

How about you?  Do you think that a computer program, this one or a fictitious one, will ever be able to adequately predict with any accuracy who should have a vaginal birth or c-section?

Pregnant Woman with Christmas Tree

Christmas time is a time when families gather together, sometimes from miles and miles apart.  If you're pregnant, this might be the ideal time to have a baby shower, simply because family is together.  Using this opportunity to have everyone together to celebrate your new baby is something lots of women decide to do.

So if you're having a Christmas Baby Shower - do you do anything differently?  Do you incorporate Christmas into your baby shower theme?

pregnancy weight gain

Okay, so it's fairly well known that the holidays is a time for gaining weight.  All the parties, the good food, the meals with family and friends - who can help but to pack on a few pounds?  The question is, how does this effect pregnancy weight gain?  Are you watching what you eat during the holidays to avoid gaining extra weight in pregnancy?  Or are you saying - to heck with it all, let's party?

22 Week Baby Girl Ultrasound

Every day lots of moms write me to share their stories of disappointment at the results of their ultrasound in regards to the sex of their baby.  This is known as gender disappointment.  While there are also many mothers who don't understand the feelings discussed, I thought that this note from an ultrasound tech, someone who deals with this on a daily basis, was particularly nice:

"I'm an ultrasound tech and I totally see so many women who feel the same exact way as you ladies every single day.  Sometimes they are pregnant with #4 or 5 only to get the same sex.  The only thing that gets you going is knowing that once you get this baby in your arms you will feel, 'Wow, I can't picture my life without you!'" -Baz

Do Baz's words comfort you?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Are Dollar Store Pregnancy Tests Worth It?

Are Dollar Store Pregnancy Tests Worth It?

Positive Pregnancy Test

Pregnancy tests are something that we need to work easily and quickly.  We have to be confident in their answers.  It's also important to note that pregnancy tests can cost a lot of money.  But the real question is - does a more expensive test give you a more accurate result?  Here is what Aliysa wondered about a dollar store pregnancy test:

"I took a test but was negative it was simple one from 99c store but could be accurate? I feel nausea a lot, craving different kinds of food and my tummy is bloated... I have 1 kid and didn't have any of this with my son really it was pretty normal and good pregnancy."

Aliysa's question is one I hear asked a lot.  The truth is - the dollar store tests, even though they cost a dollar, are just as good at detecting hCG as the more expensive pregnancy tests.  They have less packaging both in the box it comes in and the pregnancy test cassette.  They are very basic but good pregnancy tests.

When you pay for a test at a drug store, you're paying for the advertising, the packaging, the fancy parts.  This means that the digital pregnancy tests are working in the same manner as any other pregnancy test, they just display the answer in a fancier form.  So ask yourself what you really need in a pregnancy test.  If the answer is that you simply need a test that can tell you if you are pregnant - any pregnancy test will do.  If you need detailed instructions (beyond the basics), fancy color brochures or digital read outs, perhaps the more expensive tests are worth the money for the peace of mind for you.

What do you look for in a pregnancy test?  Do you trust a dollar store pregnancy test?
