How to Get Pregnant
Jan 3rd 2012, 08:58

About half of the people who become pregnant were planning on becoming pregnant, or even if they were planning it, they may not be taking really good care of themselves. So it's really important to plan for pregnancy before you try to get pregnant. This makes the chance of a healthy baby and pregnancy much higher than simply throwing caution and birth control to the wind.

Do you know what it takes to get pregnant? How often do you try? What should you avoid eating? Do you know what you need to do before you get pregnant? When do you ovulate? Test your preconceptional knowledge.

New Year's Baby

(These also work if you're trying to get pregnant too!)

Welcome to 2012! Okay, it's the day we all get to sit around and make New Year's resolutions, intentions or consider changing our ways in some manner. In some years, I've been tempted to say that pregnant women are immune from the discussions of diets and exercise that tend to swirl around the first day of the new year, but I'm changing my tune. There are plenty of things that pregnant women have to look forward to in the new year and plenty that they have control over. So here are some sample New Year's Intentions for pregnancy:

  • Record your pregnancy. At the beginning of your pregnancy, nine months feels like it will last forever. You believe that you have all the time in the world to take pictures of your changing body and growing belly or record your thoughts and feelings in a diary. Seize the day and start now before your pregnancy gets away from you...

  • Have a positive attitude about your pregnancy. Sometimes it's easy to get bogged down in the daily irritations of life, but add to that some of the physical discomforts of pregnancy like morning sickness or all of the late pregnancy discomforts and you can see why positive thinking might be hard, but focus! Using positive affirmations is a way to reframe these negative thoughts, deal with the issues and focus on the joys of pregnancy and your baby-to-be.

  • Plan ahead for how you will take care of yourself as well as baby. It's so easy to think ahead about how you will be preparing to take care of the baby. After all you are either making plans to keep the baby at home, go to daycare, bring someone to you, etc. And these decisions are important. What are you doing for you? Have you thought ahead to something you can do to take care of yourself? What exercise are you looking forward to? How will you get a few minutes each day to do something for yourself? These take more thought and effort when you're parenting a newborn.

  • Remember to take your vitamins and other medications. Taking a prenatal vitamin or any medication is not something I easily remember, no matter how important it is to my health. I'm trying desperately to get this one under control - I'd love your advice.

  • Eat better. Try to be specific about this one. I, for example, am pledging to add more fruits and vegetables to my diet. A pregnant friend of mine is pledging to eat ate home more often, a.k.a. less fast food. What small change can you sustain that would make your diet a healthier one?

  • Exercise more. Did you really think you could get a list like this without exercise? Seriously exercise, particularly in recent years, has been shown to be so important to your health and the health of your baby, these particularly includes your weight. So make this one you start for baby and continue for life. (I have a new newsletter to help you: Staying Fit in Pregnancy.)

What makes your list? Share it with us.

Women talking babies

There are a lot of worthy organizations who are asking for money, particularly as the end of the year comes up for tax benefits. If you are looking to donate your money to a pregnancy or breastfeeding related organization, consider some of the following (a small sample):

It's also realistic to say that not all of us have even $10 a year to donate to any cause, no matter how worthy.  That said, many of these organizations also have the need for volunteers.  Even if you don't have cash to give, consider asking what you can do to help an organization that speaks to your heart.

Use the comments section to add your favorite baby and birth related charities!

(Be sure to check the rules and regulations with your tax adviser.)

New Year's Baby

If you have the first baby of the new year, you often get a few gifts from the local hospital or  other organizations.  But what do you do for a baby name to celebrate being born on the first day of a new year? What would you name a New Year's Day baby?

Beyonce Baby and Pregnancy

Baby and pregnancy rumors are flying around Beyonce and partner Jay-Z's pregnancy faster than contractions in transition. We've got the rumors about her faking a pregnancy to the point where she even responded with a video talking about the rumors.  Some conspirasists still says she's not pregnant. Others say she's got a surrogate having the baby for her.

Tonight, Twitter is all fired up about Beyonce supposedly having given birth to a baby girl name Tiana May Carter.

Does anyone else remember when we didn't believe that Suri Cruise existed? What Beyonce rumors have you heard?

Positive Pregnancy Test

No, this isn't dumpster diving in the "traditional" sense of the word - this is where you go after the pregnancy test you took last night and threw away and now want to read it again.  After the time limit has expired... only last night's negative is this morning's positive?  No, it's typically nothing but an evaporation line.  This is why the instructions on the pregnancy test, even the early pregnancy test, says don't read this pregnancy tests after so many minutes. This only confuses you and messes with your mind!  I won't say I know from experience, but...
