Biceps Curl in Pregnancy

What you don't always realize in pregnancy is that your biceps will be very important once the baby is born.  Lifting and carrying, even a normal sized newborn puts your arms through a serious work out.  This exercise can be done very easily and help you prepare for all of the changes that a newborn will bring to your arms.

How do you exercise your arms?

Mother's Day is just around the corner. Sometimes, particularly when expecting your first baby, you don't think of it as a milestone. Though I'm seeing more an more pregnant moms enjoying Mother's Day. While your baby may not be here yet, it's still a great time to think about baby and how life, this time next year, will be drastically different.

Do you have any big plans? How will you be celebrating Mother's Day?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Celebrating Your Due Date

Celebrating Your Due Date

Pregnant Belly YAY

It's easy to celebrate the announcement of your pregnancy, your baby shower and even the birth of your baby.  But I'd like you to consider celebrating your due date too. Seriously, it's a day that you look forward to from the first time your practitioner spins a little wheel or you look up your due date on an online due date calculator. It's special all by itself.

Now certainly, due dates don't mean that your baby will be born that day.  In fact, only 3-4% of babies are born on their due dates. So use your due date to celebrate the feat of gestating for nine months (plus!). Do something special, even if it's only for you and your partner. I've got a few ideas for how to celebrate, but I'd love to hear how you celebrated or plan to celebrate.

National Nurses Week 2012

The week of May 6-12 is National Nurses Week. It's celebrated now because of the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing. There is a really great history found from the American Nurses Association. But more importantly, I want to thank the many nurses that I work with or have worked with over the years.

Being a nurse is hard work, particularly in the obstetrical field. As a labor and delivery nurse, you're frequently asked to be the middle man between the mother and the practitioner. This isn't always a fun position to be in. The L&D nurses that I know are kind, caring and compassionate.

So even if you don't have a baby this week, consider saying thanks to a nurse you know!

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Maurice Sendak Will Live On

Where the Wild Things Are

You might be wondering what I'm doing talking about Maurice Sendak in a pregnancy blog, but hear me out. When I was pregnant in my first child, it was almost my due date, Dr. Seuss died. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news.  The crazy pregnancy hormones had me bawling in my car. You would have thought they were going to take all of his books away at how horribly I felt about it. It took a few minutes for me to calm down and drive quickly to a bookstore. I purchased a few books and read them to my baby that night, even before she was born.

I reach out to you today, if you're feeling similarly with the death of Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak. If you're love his books and poetry, you know in your heart that the words will still be around and that you can share the love of Sendak's work with your children by reading to them.

Start today, even before your baby is born. What will you be reading in honor of Sendak?

Pregnant Woman in Car

I'm certainly looking forward to summer and with summer comes travel. So if you're planning to travel this summer for various vacations and holidays, here are some things to keep in mind.

Being pregnant means that you will need to consider your pregnancy when planning travel. Depending on what stage of pregnancy you're in, it might limit how far you travel away from home, or how you feel while traveling.  (Word to the wise, morning sickness and car sickness = not good.)

So where are you going this weekend and how has pregnancy changed your travel plans?
