2012 March of Dimes Prematurity Map

Almost a half million babies are born before they are ready in the United Stated every year. That's about 1 in 8. This is according to data compiled by the March of Dimes for it's annual report card for families on prematurity. In fact, this report card gives grades, not only the overall all score for the US, but for each state.

This year the US received a grade of C, but call me an overachiever when it comes to babies, I want nothing less than an A. (I live in a state where we have a D.) What is your state's grade?

The other kicker to remember, is that while the prematurity rate has dropped for the fifth consecutive year, it's still way too high. And that premature infants can come in many sizes and gestational ages. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security simply because you've hit 37 weeks into pregnancy, if your labor isn't starting spontaneously at that point, your baby may not be ready - question elective induction.

What questions do you have for your doctor or midwife about prematurity?

Autism and Pregnancy Fevers

Sick Pregnant Woman

On the scare factory that is the vast majority of the media, you've no doubt seen how a fever in pregnancy is potentially linked to autism. Stop panicking about it, I'd probably go as far as to say, stop worrying about it, even.

Here is the piece that is left out of most of what I'm reading on the mainstream media:

"Our results do not suggest that mild infections, febrile episodes, or use of antibiotics during pregnancy are strong risk factors for ASD/infantile autism. The results may be due to multiple testing; the few positive findings are potential chance findings."

The fact is that, you should do what you can to stay healthy. Eat well, exercise, sleep the right amount for you. You should talk to your midwife or doctor about illnesses and vaccinations that may be the best options for you, including the flu vaccine in pregnancy. But guess what, sometimes people get sick and sometimes those sick people happen to be pregnant. Be ready to address your symptoms and do what you can to minimize your illness, but stop panicking.  Didn't anyone every tell you that stress is bad for you in pregnancy too?

Here's a fact, relatively speaking, the risk of autism is small. We are all really aware of autism and what it can do to a family and it's a hard life. That doesn't make it more likely to happen to you. So know that you do what you can, you talk to the professionals who know you and you move about your daily life.

What else are you worried about?

Pregnant Woman Checking in at Hospital

The week before Thanksgiving is filled with inductions of labor.  Some of these will be for medical reasons, others for social reasons, but either way an induction increases the risks to both mom and baby.  Inducing labor is not something most people are anxious to do. But there is a guide to help you have a calmer, less stressful induction.

Ultrasound Tech Offers Advice on Gender Disappointment

22 Week Baby Girl Ultrasound

Every day lots of moms write me to share their stories of disappointment at the results of their ultrasound in regards to the sex of their baby.  This is known as gender disappointment.  While there are also many mothers who don't understand the feelings discussed, I thought that this note from an ultrasound tech, someone who deals with this on a daily basis, was particularly nice:

"I'm an ultrasound tech and I totally see so many women who feel the same exact way as you ladies every single day.  Sometimes they are pregnant with #4 or 5 only to get the same sex.  The only thing that gets you going is knowing that once you get this baby in your arms you will feel, 'Wow, I can't picture my life without you!'" -Baz

Do Baz's words comfort you?
