2012 March of Dimes Prematurity Map

Almost a half million babies are born before they are ready in the United Stated every year. That's about 1 in 8. This is according to data compiled by the March of Dimes for it's annual report card for families on prematurity. In fact, this report card gives grades, not only the overall all score for the US, but for each state.

This year the US received a grade of C, but call me an overachiever when it comes to babies, I want nothing less than an A. (I live in a state where we have a D.) What is your state's grade?

The other kicker to remember, is that while the prematurity rate has dropped for the fifth consecutive year, it's still way too high. And that premature infants can come in many sizes and gestational ages. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security simply because you've hit 37 weeks into pregnancy, if your labor isn't starting spontaneously at that point, your baby may not be ready - question elective induction.

What questions do you have for your doctor or midwife about prematurity?
