There are a lot of worthy organizations who are asking for money, particularly as the end of the year comes up for tax benefits. If you are looking to donate your money to a pregnancy or breastfeeding related organization, consider some of the following (a small sample):

Women talking babies

It's also realistic to say that not all of us have even $10 a year to donate to any cause, no matter how worthy.  That said, many of these organizations also have the need for volunteers.  Even if you don't have cash to give, consider asking what you can do to help an organization that speaks to your heart.

Use the comments section to add your favorite baby and birth related charities!

(Be sure to check the rules and regulations with your tax adviser.)

Thanksgiving is not a complication of pregnancy.

If you are due in the next few weeks and your doctor or midwife offers you an induction so that you can be home with your baby and eating turkey by Thursday afternoon, remember, this is considered an elective induction and carries greater risk for your baby and your labor than waiting for spontaneous labor. This can include a higher risk of your baby being in the neonatal intensive care (NICU), fetal distress, cesarean section or other complications of induction and potential prematurity. The vast majority of moms and babies do much better waiting for the baby to signal that he or she is ready to be born when there is an absence of complications. Now, that is something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

2012 March of Dimes Prematurity Map

Almost a half million babies are born before they are ready in the United Stated every year. That's about 1 in 8. This is according to data compiled by the March of Dimes for it's annual report card for families on prematurity. In fact, this report card gives grades, not only the overall all score for the US, but for each state.

This year the US received a grade of C, but call me an overachiever when it comes to babies, I want nothing less than an A. (I live in a state where we have a D.) What is your state's grade?

The other kicker to remember, is that while the prematurity rate has dropped for the fifth consecutive year, it's still way too high. And that premature infants can come in many sizes and gestational ages. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security simply because you've hit 37 weeks into pregnancy, if your labor isn't starting spontaneously at that point, your baby may not be ready - question elective induction.

What questions do you have for your doctor or midwife about prematurity?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Autism and Pregnancy Fevers

Autism and Pregnancy Fevers

Sick Pregnant Woman

On the scare factory that is the vast majority of the media, you've no doubt seen how a fever in pregnancy is potentially linked to autism. Stop panicking about it, I'd probably go as far as to say, stop worrying about it, even.

Here is the piece that is left out of most of what I'm reading on the mainstream media:

"Our results do not suggest that mild infections, febrile episodes, or use of antibiotics during pregnancy are strong risk factors for ASD/infantile autism. The results may be due to multiple testing; the few positive findings are potential chance findings."

The fact is that, you should do what you can to stay healthy. Eat well, exercise, sleep the right amount for you. You should talk to your midwife or doctor about illnesses and vaccinations that may be the best options for you, including the flu vaccine in pregnancy. But guess what, sometimes people get sick and sometimes those sick people happen to be pregnant. Be ready to address your symptoms and do what you can to minimize your illness, but stop panicking.  Didn't anyone every tell you that stress is bad for you in pregnancy too?

Here's a fact, relatively speaking, the risk of autism is small. We are all really aware of autism and what it can do to a family and it's a hard life. That doesn't make it more likely to happen to you. So know that you do what you can, you talk to the professionals who know you and you move about your daily life.

What else are you worried about?
