Save the Children Breastfeeding Report

Save the Children has a new report out on breastfeeding. The report speaks heavily about the crucial hours immediately after birth, stating that we could save up to 830,000 lives per year if all newborns were able to benefit from colostrum in the immediate postpartum. Though we have many barriers, including "cultural and community pressures, the health worker shortage, lack of maternity legislation, and aggressive marketing of breast-milk substitutes."

While this is more critical for infants born in developing countries, the United States has it's own problems, including hospital routines that often make it difficult for moms and babies to be together in the first hours. One of the ways to tell if your hospital encourages immediate skin to skin and breastfeeding is to see if they have achieved a Baby Friendly designation by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. It is also important to note that some hospitals are working towards this designation, and while they may not have obtained it yet this step is beging done routinely.

Save the Children is asking that you sign a petition to have Secretary of State John Kerry to renew the 1,000 Call to Action. They also have a neat video by Isla Fisher in Brazil. The breast milk banks at every hospital are really impressive!

Quail Egg Pregnancy Announcement

I'm all about unique pregnancy announcements. I found this unique one on Etsy the other night, using a quail's egg. The shop owner actually inserts your personalized message, "short and sweet", into the eggs before shipping them to whomever you would like. I think this might be a really cool way to tell someone special who is far away from home.

You can also have this done as a baby shower invite.  Elizabeth over at Little Elephant Crafts is willing to take your special orders!

Who would you send one to and why?

Preemptive Treatment for Morning Sickness Better

Morning Sickness

In a recent study of morning sickness in women who had had prior severe morning sickness or hyperemesis gravidarum, some bright spots. The researchers found that if they began medicinal treatments prior to the start of symptoms they saw a drastic reduction in the number and severity of symptoms. While this wouldn't have helped Kate Middleton, as it's her first pregnancy, it would be helpful for her next pregnancy.

100% of the mothers in this study did develop nausea and vomiting.  So it's not a cure all, but the combination of Vitamin B6 and antihistamine doxylamine reduced the symptoms by 70%. It's a small sample, and it isn't ready to roll out as beneficial for all pregnant women, just those with a history of debilitating sickness.

Did you have hyperemesis in your pregnancy?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Practice Contractions

Pregnant Woman Stretching

Anyone who is pregnant, particularly towards the end of pregnancy, can tell you that practice contractions, also know as Braxton Hicks contractions, can be really annoying. The good news is that these contractions, normally describe as painless, do have a point, and no, it's not to annoy you.

I first notice them as I was explaining to someone I didn't experience them. I reached down to prove a point and noticed that my belly was hard to the touch. I hadn't really be feeling them until that point. I certainly noticed them more in subsequent pregnancies. Many moms say they felt the same thing with regards to second pregnancies.

I like to think of it as exercise for my uterus. It is a muscle.  Even if it doesn't open my cervix and end with the birth of my baby, it does help me prepare for labor. (Just to be specific, I'm not talking preterm labor contractions or warning signs.)

So what do you think about Braxton Hicks contractions?

5 Reasons to Enjoy a Pregnant Valentine's Day
Feb 14th 2013, 04:31

Valentines Day Baby

Happy Valentine's Day!  Yes, it's really okay to celebrate while you're pregnant.  (Unless you don't want to celebrate.)  Here are five reasons why you can and should celebrate:

  1. Obviously there is someone in your life who likes you enough to get you pregnant or help you get pregnant.  Celebrate that - together!
  2. You don't have to worry about birth control. It's true, you are already pregnant or are trying to become pregnant.  Pat yourself on the back and know that you're free from the worry that birth control can add to the mix.
  3. Multiple orgasms. (Do I really need to explain that one?)
  4. A chance to take a walk on the wild side and try a great sex position that you haven't thought to try before, and perhaps now need to out of necessity.
  5. All those crazy hormones?  Engage them fully today and enjoy feeling the love. Be romantic. Be affectionate. Do what feels right for you and your partner, because even if you're not having sex (for whatever reason from 'I don't want to.' to 'I can't because my doctor says so.'), a little bit of oxytocin from cuddling never hurt anyone.

What are your Valentine's Day plans?
