Pregnant Couple Foot Massage

If you've heard me talk recently about my shoes, it's about how my feet have grown about half a size since my last pregnancy. Now I'd heard the old wives tale that your feet can grow while you're pregnant, but after seven kids, I hadn't found this to be true. But man, if that last kid didn't get me!

Now we have proof that pregnancy does alter your foot size, by as much as a whole size. In addition to this, the scholarly article also talks about supporting the foot in general in pregnancy as the best thing for mom and her tired, aching feet.

How do your feet feel in pregnancy?

SIDS: A Personal Story

I'm sitting here today remembering my nephew, Nathan. I got the news that Nathan had died overnight. It was SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Previously I had only heard of SIDS on TV in shows like Quincy or on the news. Nathan died in March 1992, it was just before the American Academy of Pediatrics published their "back to sleep" campaign starter in April 1992 to reduce the number of SIDS deaths. Thankfully it has worked for many parents as one of the ways to reduce the risk factors for SIDS. Do you know what the risk factors are and what you can do to help prevent SIDS in your family?

Pregnancy Week 15 Apple

A new study showed that moms who consumed junk foods in pregnancy had infants who seemed to be desensitized to junk foods, meaning that they required more junk food to get the same good feelings.  This can be something that many mothers feel really discouraged by, particularly if she's having cravings for sweets and other less than ideal foods.

The main take aways should be to not panic. Everyone eats meals that are less than ideal sometimes. The goal is to have more ideal meals than those that are less than ideal. (And let's face it, sometimes there are meals that are complete bombs.)  Consider sweet alternatives that are healthy to those that are less healthy - fruit versus pastries, as an example. Have you tried the frozen banana trick? It really works!

What is your advice for making good choices?

Thinking about Pregnancy

One thing many moms say as far as early pregnancy goes is that their taste buds change rapidly. One mom said, "I knew I was pregnant because I made dinner and the meat loaf tasted like metal. I threw the whole thing out thinking it was bad. The next night, the same thing... That's when I knew."  Other moms have odd tastes in their mouths as well.

Did your taste buds change in early pregnancy?

What was your first pregnancy symptom?

Breastmilk Keepsakes

Breastfeeding is an amazing gift. There is so much you put into it.  So when I first saw this keepsake jewelry, from the MommyMilk Etsy Store, that commemorates breastfeeding through your breast milk, I loved it. These bracelets, pins and necklaces are really sweet ways to remember a special time in your life. I had a bunch of questions about these were made and how much milk would be needed.  Amazingly enough this only takes about 1-2 tablespoons of breast milk to make.

You can pick the background and some include quotes.  You can also choose the shape of your breast milk bead - think heart, star, moon, cross, etc. This makes the perfect gift for a mom as her breastfeeding relationship ends, begins or just because. Which one would you choose?

Girl or Boy Cupcakes

There are some traditionalists out there who think that a baby shower should only involve cake.  I'm, however, a huge fan of the cupcake. I love so much about the cupcake.  Here are my top reasons to make a case for the cupcake at a baby shower:

  1. They are individual servings - no mess involved.
  2. You can more easily offer a variety of flavors.
  3. You don't have to cut through any adorable creations on a cake.
  4. The possibilities are endless for decorating.
  5. You can easily hide surprises inside, like the pink or blue gender reveal fillings.

Mom Trying to Choose Between Baby and Sex

A new study came out this week talking about how long moms actually wait regardless of what we tell them. It showed that the majority of women resume sex by 7-8 weeks after giving birth. Interestingly enough, they found that moms who had a cesarean waited the longest to resume sex postpartum. The theory was that many were waiting until after their six week check up to get some assurance from their midwife or doctor.

The study was done with 1500+ first time moms who answered questionnaires early in pregnancy and 3, 6 and 12 months postpartum. Only 78% of women had resumed sex by 12 weeks after giving birth. Though it's important to note that this is talking about vaginal sex, not all sexual activity.

Factors that were involved in earlier resumption of your sex life included:

  • Having a vaginal birth
  • Being younger (24 years and younger)

Women who had had a spontaneous vaginal birth were more likely to have sex sooner. If mom had a cesarean she was only 45% of moms had attempted to have vaginal intercourse versus 60% of moms who had spontaneous vaginal births.

That said, moms should assume they will take some time to resume having sex.  A study shouldn't inform exactly when you resume your love life.  That's between you and your partner.
