Mom Trying to Choose Between Baby and Sex

A new study came out this week talking about how long moms actually wait regardless of what we tell them. It showed that the majority of women resume sex by 7-8 weeks after giving birth. Interestingly enough, they found that moms who had a cesarean waited the longest to resume sex postpartum. The theory was that many were waiting until after their six week check up to get some assurance from their midwife or doctor.

The study was done with 1500+ first time moms who answered questionnaires early in pregnancy and 3, 6 and 12 months postpartum. Only 78% of women had resumed sex by 12 weeks after giving birth. Though it's important to note that this is talking about vaginal sex, not all sexual activity.

Factors that were involved in earlier resumption of your sex life included:

  • Having a vaginal birth
  • Being younger (24 years and younger)

Women who had had a spontaneous vaginal birth were more likely to have sex sooner. If mom had a cesarean she was only 45% of moms had attempted to have vaginal intercourse versus 60% of moms who had spontaneous vaginal births.

That said, moms should assume they will take some time to resume having sex.  A study shouldn't inform exactly when you resume your love life.  That's between you and your partner.
