5 Questions to Ask Before Changing Your Due Date

Pregnancy Wheel - Gestation Calculator

Once you are pregnant, you are given a due date. That due date can be calculated in many ways. It might also seem like the date isn't so important, because babies come when they want, right? While this certainly should be the case for most pregnancies, a good number of times the due date you're given really does matter and to change it willy nilly can have some disastrous effects on your baby's health.

Did your due date change in pregnancy?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: To Pee or Not to Pee

To Pee or Not to Pee

Toilet Sign

I heard a podcast about a cartoon Christoph Niemann had drawn about how you wake up in the middle of the night and realize that you have to pee, but refuse to get up and go to the bathroom, hoping that the feeling will go away.  It really hit home for me.  I can remember being hugely pregnant with twins and feeling that I would do anything to both simultaneously move nothing and yet empty my bladder.

Or perhaps you fall into the other category - the pay as you go variety.  Have you ever, obviously jokingly, offer someone else money to go to the bathroom for you?  I also remember jokingly offering my husband cash in exchange for him going to the bathroom for me.  He never took me up on the offer, much to my chagrin.

Do you ever feel that way?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Mother-In-Law Hurt by Not Being at Birth

Mother-In-Law Hurt by Not Being at Birth
Dec 4th 2012, 14:00

I've written a lot about mother-in-laws and others not being invited to birth. There is also a spot for others to share their stories over the years, so have been very supportive of mother-in-laws, while others haven't. (I might add that some were also anti-grandma in general.)  Then I got a response from a mother-in-law:

Grandma and Baby

"I've had a very hard day today. My DIL had a planned C-sec. Her and my son said we want you and her mom there only in the waiting room. I said great happy to be there for their first. A half hour before I was to arrive at hosp. son called and said there were delays, her mom said to me I will call you after the birth. Yes I'm hurt and my son doesn't understand why. Her mom of course was there. We all get along great, should I feel left out and hurt? They sent me a pic over my phone."

What advice do you have for her? Can you see yourself in this situation?

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Kate Middleton is expecting her first baby. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are both 30 and this will be the first child for both. Prince William is the grandson of Queen Elizabeth and is third in line for the throne. The couple has been the source of pregnancy rumors ever since their wedding in 2011.

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Cool Packs for Post-Birth Pain

Cool Packs for Post-Birth Pain
Dec 2nd 2012, 11:21

Postpartum Mom

After you have a baby, your bottom can be quite sore. There are a lot of treatments that people talk about as feeling good and helping to relieve the pain, but none as often touted as using cool packs to relieve the swelling and pain associated with having a baby. In fact, one of the first things that happens after you have a baby is you get a cool pack placed on your bottom and a pair of mesh panties.

That said, I was a bit surprised to read that these cool packs may not be as helpful at relieving pain post-birth as I would have thought. Now certainly, there is not harm in doing it. But my bigger concern is what is helpful? The other options available are: topical creams and sprays, oral medications, sitz baths and a few others.

What worked for you after you had your baby?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: What to Give a Sibling When a New Baby is Born

What to Give a Sibling When a New Baby is Born

Sister and Newborn Sibling

When you have a baby, you often don't think about the new baby as a gift giving event for most part, but it's a great way to celebrate the older child as becoming an older brother or sister. The problem is, there are good presents to give, and not so great presents to give. Here is a quick list of what you shouldn't give:

  • Noisy toys (drum, toy guitar, electronic toy with no shut off, etc.)
  • Things that take parental supervision
  • Things that are hazardous to the new baby

That may sound like its about everything possible, though the truth is there are several things you can give that are not only fun for the child, but are safe for the new baby.  Here's my list of gifts to give a new sibling. What would you add?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Sleep Positioners Implicated in Infant Deaths

Sleep Positioners Implicated in Infant Deaths

The CDC is reporting on infant deaths from the infant sleep positioners. These are typically foam inserts for the cribs of infants used to ensure that they don't roll over. They can be purchased or handed down. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) also has a short video on how these can be dangerous. Remember, nothing in the crib but your baby. No toys. No bumpers. And no sleep positioners.
