Hickies

It's the sad truth of pregnancy, but sometimes you grow a great big belly, or simply have a belly to body ratio that prevents you from bending over well. This can lead to a host of problems from shaving your legs to tying your shoes. I will admit to sticking with slip on shoes for the duration of a summer pregnancy, simply because I didn't want to ask for help in typing my shoes.

I know I'm not alone with this problem. The solutions available have traditionally been: ask for help or wear slip on shoes. That's where a neat product called Hickies comes in. These are elastic fasteners for your athletic or other shoes that tie. You simply slip them in part where your laces would normally go and your shoes are converted to slip ons!  They are easy enough to put in the shoes (easier than lacing some shoes) and come in many color combinations. You can compare the prices of Hickies!

8 Reasons People Don't Hire Doulas

Woman in Labor

May is International Doula Month, so I thought I'd spend some time talking about doulas. I think that in general, the knowledge of what a doula is and what a doula does has gone up dramatically in recent years. So, instead, I thought I'd talk about reasons why women don't hire doulas. When I started asking, the answers really surprised me. Have you heard any of these?  What are your thoughts?

Did you use a doula? Did you hold any of these beliefs or thoughts before?

Lollipop Tree

So I saw this lollipop tree at another shower I attended, it was meant to be eaten, but it was so cute, we all refused. But once I saw it, I knew I had to try to make it.  This was so simple, and it makes a very cute decoration or snack item for your baby shower. (Heck, I could even see eating on this thing while nursing a baby.) Come find out how you can make one for your next shower or even teacher appreciation gift. (I'm giving this one to the nurses in labor and delivery!)

I was talking to a friend who is pregnant with her first baby the other day. She said something that really surprised me. She told me that she was really worried about her baby shower. I was a bit confused, why would anyone worry about a baby shower?

So she started rattling off a list of things that could go wrong. I felt like maybe she was being a bit of a worrier. (She has a tendency to do that...)  And then I read a story where one of her fears really happened (to Jenna Bush Hager).

Do your baby shower fears make the list: 8 Things You Worry Will Happen at Your Baby Shower

If your fears aren't on the list, put them in the comments.

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Anesthesia Might Help with External Versions for Breech Babies

Anesthesia Might Help with External Versions for Breech Babies

Frank and Complete Breech

A new study shows that using regional anesthesia, like an epidural or a spinal, may be cost effective for breech babies. The heart of the study says that if you use the anesthesia for an external cephalic version (ECV), manually turning a breech baby from the outside, it is more comfortable for mom and more likely to work. Then you lower the cesarean rate and save the risks associated with cesarean birth as well as money for at least some of these mothers and babies.

The study was really aimed at discussing the costs alone, citing that some providers say that the cost increase is not justifiable. Though there is more to consider than simply the cost.  There is also the effectiveness of the procedure (One small study shows it is much more effective with anesthesia.) as well as mom's satisfaction, which is also higher with anesthesia. So, doctors should not consider costs when talking about doing the ECV procedure. Complication rates were very low for both groups (with and without anesthesia), but overall vaginal birth is safer and more cost effective.

Were you offered an epidural or other form of anesthesia when you had an external version?  Share the details in the comments.

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: What causes twins?

What causes twins?

Newborn Twins

Mariah Carey. Jennifer Lopez. Angelina Jolie. Julia Robert. Celine Dion. Marcia Cross. Rebecca Romijn. Molly Ringwald.  What do they all have in common? Twins!

I was reading a blog post the other day that had a long list of celebrities with twins.  It was talking about how these celebrities had probably used fertility drugs and didn't want to talk about it.  Most people were of the belief that these celebrities had used some sort of help to get pregnant with twins. Though the one thing that wasn't pointed out was that there could also be a logical explanation - as you get older, it becomes more likely that you'll have twins.

There are some other things that can increase the likelihood of having twins, including:

  • Breastfeeding when you conceive.
  • Be a twin.
  • Being older when you get pregnant.
  • And more...
