Pregnant Smoker

A new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that nearly 11% of all pregnant women smoked in the last trimester. Their data reports on information from 27 sites where the information was collected. Though, they warn, the numbers are most likely low given that this is self-reported. They know from other studies that moms tend to overreport quitting and underreport smoking.

Some of the risks of smoking in pregnancy include:

Given the severity of these risks, it's important to help pregnant women who smoke and those who intend to become pregnant to stop. They offer a variety of ways to help that happen from interventions with your care provider, smoking cessation being affordable, and policies like 100% Smoke Free.

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Dads and Miscarriage

Sad Couple Comforting Each Other

When a miscarriage occurs, there are at least two parties involved who need to heal emotionally, but often we focus on the mother. She also frequently has physically healing to do. The sad fact is that many dads get overlooked in the healing process. Though this doesn't mean that they don't have needs.

In fact, many dads have a lot of feelings about miscarriage and the loss of a pregnancy. They are worried, and sad.  They feel like they have not many people to talk to about their feelings and their experience.

Have you had a miscarriage or has your partner?  How did you both grieve?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Mood Swings in Pregnancy

Mood Swings in Pregnancy

Hand Covering Mouth

You probably read the title and thought, "Say it isn't so, Robin!" Mood wings in pregnancy, really? The fluctuating feelings are something that Hollywood certainly likes to poke fun at when it comes to pregnancy. This depiction made me really discount just how much of an affect that this would have on my life. Then I got pregnant.

I remember watching a car commercial on television. It was talking about how this company had a new program where they were shipping more cars to foreign countries than any other manufacturer. Watching the boats filled with cars bound for different countries, I burst into tears. My husband gave me an odd look. "Isn't that just wonderful," I sobbed. That's when I knew I was the victim of pregnancy mood swings.

Being weepy at commercials, YouTube videos and lots of things is pretty common. Some moms also experience negative emotions like anger unexpectedly. This can really throw you for a loop. The truth is nearly all moms experience emotional rollercoasters, in many directions.

How did you experience emotional changes in pregnancy? What's your funniest story? Share it in the comments.

2013 Prematurity Report Card from the March of Dimes

11.5% of pregnancies in the United States prematurely in the United States, that over 450,000 babies. Being born too early can cause a host of issues ranging from the death of your baby to life long learning problems. Even if your baby lives and has no problems that last lengthy periods of time, those early days and months in the NICU can leave their marks on families both in terms of the experience and in the costs associated with the care for preterm babies.

Every year the March of Dimes puts out a report card to let us know how the US is doing as well as the individual states. While we finally have a handful of states who score an A, the overall score in the US is a C. My state is a C with a 12.7% rate of prematurity.

November is National Prematurity Awareness Month and November 17th is World Prematurity Awareness Day. The will be hosting several Twitter chats this month on a variety of topics. I hope you'll stop by and join them at @MarchofDimes.

So what can you do to prevent prematurity for your baby? The first thing is to know the signs of preterm labor and to seek help immediately if you see any of them. It's better to call your midwife or doctor and be wrong, than to call too late. Other than that, get regular prenatal care, talk to your practitioner about concerns and get educated about the end of pregnancy.

What's your state's preterm rate? Have you ever had a scare of preterm labor?

When Dads Write Birth Stories

Isaac and family

I always make it a point to write out my birth story after the baby is born. I think it's a nice gift for my baby and cathartic for me. Being a childbirth educator and doula, my version always reads like a semi-technical manual with a few niceties thrown in.

I want to complain about something or focus on small details. When my husband gifted me with his version of our son's birth it was such a neat gift. I was able to see the birth in a whole different light. He saw it as this amazing thing. He was proud of me and in awe. He was moved to tears but the process.

Have you asked your partner to write out their version? What was their response?

Morena Baccarin Pregnant

Lots of celebrity moms having babies and announcing pregnancies. Like Morena Baccarin who had a natural breech birth in a hospital recently, Kate Winslet, Thandie Newton, and more. Are we simply paying more attention to celebrities or are they really having more babies? It's hard to tell but even people who don't have kids of their own tell me that they find themselves really caught up in the whole celebrity baby craze. Though most have a hard time explaining what they find so fascinating about it.

While some claim that it's a really poor use of time, other think it's harmful. They say that the fascination is hard on the celebrities and moms alike. Others claim that the watching will happen whether they are doing it or someone else is, so they might as well enjoy it. There are even some who think that celebrity pregnancies can be a useful teaching tool to talk about various topics, like vaginal birth after cesarean, home birth, scheduled cesareans, etc.

What celebrity moms do you follow and why?

Let Me Out! Halloween Costume for Pregnancy

I spotted this outfit one morning at preschool - it's a great way to have a last minute costume while pregnant. While this saying might not be your favorite, you can certainly make a quick maternity t-shirt and some puffy paint to add your own.  Here are some of my ideas:
  • Let me out!
  • Due in___
  • Shake, Rattle & Roll
  • Eviction Notice (List Due Date)
  • Bun in the Oven
  • This belly is my Halloween costume.

What would your t-shirt say?

Strangers Hands on Belly

Strangers touching your belly happens so frequently in pregnancy, it's often thought of as a side effect of pregnancy. The problem is not simply that it's strangers, but friends and family too. Most people simply don't like to be touched without giving consent.

Now some pregnant women feel differently, particularly if it's someone they know. One mom said, "I know they just want to be a part of a miracle, who can resist?" But there are just as many moms who says - Hands off!

Now in Pennsylvania, a man is being charged after hugging a pregnant neighbor and touching her belly. The mother-to-be called the cops. Apparently you can be charged with harassment if you touch someone with the intent to harm, annoy or alarm them. My guess is the technicality here will be trying to prove the intent, even if the product was harm, annoyance or alarm for the mother-to-be.

So nuisance to deal with or chargeable offense? Where do you draw the line personally?

Hilary and Lilah at birth

Thirteen years ago today, it was an average Saturday. My nine year old daughter was preparing for her big Girl Scout trip the next day. My sons were raking leaves and jumping in them. And I was 41+ weeks pregnant.

I really was looking forward to going with my daughter's troop on their trip. It had been a long time since I'd been spelunking and I really missed it.I knew this wasn't going to be the down and dirty trip that I was used to from high school and college, but it would still be fun. We were going to a local cave where you could walk upright the entire time and not a single area was even slightly dangerous, but it was still a cave! That's when I got the call.

The Girl Scout leaders, upon seeing that I'd signed up to come had decided that I wasn't going to be allowed to go simply because I was pregnant. I was horrified. First of all, weren't I a better judge than they were of what I could handle? It was less than a mile track. Second of all, my daughter really wanted me to go and I knew I was about to be really busy with a new baby. Quickly my emotions turned to anger and frustration. I eventually decided I'd show up, what were they going to do to me? Kick me out? Let's just say that my anger and indignation was scaring my husband. He knows to be worried when I am in that "mood."

Well, as luck would have it, I went into labor in the middle of the night before I could show up for my confrontation at the caves. And after one of my fastest labors, a cool 12ish hours, I was holding a squishy newborn daughter in my arms. So my older daughter missed her caving trip and her mom didn't get to go with her. But all was forgiven as I had finally given her the sister she so desperately wanted. I guess I owe them both a spelunking trip!

So, what's the craziest thing you've tried to do when you were past your due date? Did other people mind? How did you react?

Pregnancy test. 40 Weeks. 9 Months. Baby. This is probably how the timeline for pregnancy goes for a man, but the truth is there are so many moments in pregnancy that act as milestones. Some of these are positive, providing us with a reason to celebrate, others are merely the marking of the passage of time and offer more a time to breathe a sigh of relief.

What do you consider to be a milestone in pregnancy? Let me know in the comments. In the meantime, enjoy my thoughts on the: 21 Milestones in Pregnancy

Nathan, Sleeping at 6 weeks

Today would be the 22nd birthday of my nephew, Nathan. He was such a sweet baby and my "practice" baby. He was born about five weeks before my first child was born, so I used to really enjoy taking care of him. I even enjoyed the diapers! I can distinctly remember holding him up to my pregnant belly and wondering how all six pounds of him would fit inside my body, knowing my baby would have to be smaller. (She wasn't!)

Nathan lived to be four and a half months old, dying of SIDS in the spring of 1992, about one month before the American Academy of Pediatrics released their, now famous, publication discussing the benefits of back sleeping in the prevention of SIDS. Thankfully for my family, Nathan was sleeping on his back, we could wipe away that issue of potential guilt. In an effort to share Nathan with his older brother and cousin (my daughter), we would talk about him often. In this month of Infant Loss remembrance, I often recall something my daughter asked when she was older - are their birthdays in Heaven?

Kids really see a loss very differently than adults. This is something we don't think about when we approach the topic. Many of us are ill equpied to deal with our own grief and questions to even consider what the little ones think. So, here are some of the resources that I can offer you as you may struggle with this issue yourself:

What kinds of questions did you get asked by your kids?

Defining the End of Pregnancy
Oct 23rd 2013, 13:17

Newborn in Delivery Room

The debate has been raging for awhile as it became clear that women did not understand the terminology surrounding the end of pregnancy, but it is finally official that there are new definitions to help women and those who care for them to understand what to call the period of time surrounding the end of pregnancy from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM).

  • Early Term:  Between 37 weeks 0 days and 38 weeks 6 days
  • Full Term:    Between 39 weeks 0 days and 40 weeks 6 days
  • Late Term:   Between 41 weeks 0 days and 41 weeks 6 days
  • Postterm:     Between 42 weeks 0 days and beyond

The vast majority of reasoning for this change comes form the push to avoid elective births prior to 39 weeks.  As the data piles on showing this to be a risky practice, it is important that women, as well as the doctors and midwives who care for them, truly understand why this is a problematic issue. So, unless you have a really strong medical reason or you go into labor spontaneously, you will have to wait until you're full term to schedule an elective birth.

What's the conversation like with your practitioner?

My Favorite Due Date
Oct 21st 2013, 08:41

17 Week Ultrasound

Don't laugh but October 21st is my favorite due date. It's honestly because it was my due date - twice. Yes, I managed to get the same due date twice. Though the kids we had due then both came late, and not on the same day. It certainly made it easy to remember my due date, even if three years apart. (My mom jokingly offered to pay for cable!)

Did you have babies due at a certain time of the year? Do you know anyone who has kids due on the same date or even born on the same date? Would that be something you'd prefer or not?
