Sad Woman

When you're early in pregnancy, every twinge can send you panicking to the bathroom to check for blood. Spotting or bleeding are the signs that most people know to look for as a symptom of miscarriage. The problem is that there can be other signs or even no signs. This can make it difficult to tell when something is wrong with your pregnancy.

Sometimes cramping or low backache can be a sign that you're miscarrying. This is to be thought of like contractions. Though sometimes cramping and backache aren't signs of anything other than cramping and backache. This can be terribly confusing.

So the trick is to put it out of your mind as long as possible. I remember telling one OB that I wished I could sleep the entire first trimester away. She told me that was silly, but I'm not sure she understood how frightening every twinge was for me. In the end, I wound up trying to remember that I had no control over it. I couldn't wish away the symptoms, I couldn't prevent a miscarriage. And for the most part that's true of every pregnant woman.

So while we can't stop the worry or the twinges, we can choose how we respond to it.  That response can be trying to calm yourself down or seeking the advice of your midwife or doctor to help calm yourself.

What worked for you?

Best for Babes Event

Best for Babes held a celebrity breastfeeding and toxin-free home event. The goal was to help celebrities who were pregnant or recently had babies learn about breastfeeding and its benefits as well as keeping children away from harmful toxins. Emphasis was placed on all of the public health aspects of breastfeeding as well as overcoming the Booby Traps (TM) that all moms face when it comes to breastfeeding.

I love to hear the stories of moms and how they see breastfeeding, what worked, what didn't and what advice they have to give others. At the center of this event were the stories of three amazing moms: Jenna Elfman, who struggled in breastfeeding her first baby and with her second baby had enough milk to donate to a methamphetamine addicted baby; Laila Ali, who shared about her struggles feeding her first baby; and Kelly Preston, who admitted to being late to the event because she was nursing her 16 month old son. Guests were also able to look at products from Ameda, including their new multi-user pump; and Leading Lady, maker of some great nursing bras. You can stay tuned to their blog for more on the event as well as a chance to win a swag bag from the event!

Your thoughts on celebrity breastfeeding: does it help the cause?

Pregnant Woman

Am I the only one who thinks that maternity underwear needs a serious overhaul?  It falls off, rides up and is generally unhelpful.  I tried nearly every type of pregnancy panty during my pregnancies.  One time I did find, when I was 41 weeks pregnant, a brand that worked for me, only to find out that in my next pregnancy, my belly shape negated all the benefits I'd found in the previous pregnancy.  What's a woman to do?

How do you solve the pregnancy panty crisis?

Water Birth - Oh it's a baby!

Having your baby at a birth center is something many moms chose to do. This is a nice step between a hospital and a home birth. When I say birth center, I usually think of what is specifically known as a free standing birth center, a facility to have a baby, but outside of a hospital.  This provides the most autonomy for the practitioners (doctors or midwives) as well as the moms and their families.

There are a few true birth centers that are within the walls of a hospital. Though many find it is really hard to have birth center in this manner, because the hospital mindset is so pervasive. It is possible but simply harder.

The problem for me comes in the marketing departments of hospitals who choose to call their standard labor and delivery floors - birth centers. This has fooled more than one mother into believing that she was going to have a different mindset for her care. Don't be fooled.

If your hospital calls itself a birth center, ask if they are accredited by the American Association of Birth Centers (AABC). Think of this as consumer protection from false advertising.

Does your hospital do this? Do you have access to a real birth center?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Pitocin

About Pregnancy & Childbirth
Pregnancy & Childbirth
Pitocin
Apr 15th 2012, 11:44

IV Fluids

Pitocin is a synthetic hormone that tries to mimic oxytocin in our bodies. Oxytocin is the love hormone. It's known for it's role in love making, loving and in labor. Yes, labor. Oxytocin is the hormone that plays a large role in the contractions you experience to help birth your baby.

Pitocin can be used to help speed a stalled labor, induce a labor that has not begun but needs to start or it can help stop postpartum bleeding if it becomes dangerous. Pitocin itself is not the evil incarnate that many moms talk about from their birth experiences.

The problem is that Pitocin can be overused in many labors. The rise in induction of labor has gone dramatic upwards, many times not for medical reasons. The same can be said for speeding up labors that are slower than many practitioners would like.

This overuse can lead to an increase in other complications, even when used for medical indications. This can include fetal distress, contractions that are too long and too strong, and an increase in cesarean sections, particularly for first time mothers.

Another issue with Pitocin is that when it is given, through an IV drip, it is turned up until the contractions reach a certain pattern. This is often a transition like labor, a very hard part of labor. Many hospitals and practitioners have a goal to get to that pattern as quickly as possible.  You may notice that Pitocin is turned up every 20-30 minutes depending on the protocol. You have the right to ask that this be done more slowly. Ideally, how often it was adjusted would be a conversation between you and your doctor or midwife.

Some moms swear by Pit, as it's affectionately called in many labor rooms. Other moms are freaked out by the mere mention of the word, both from experience and horror stories. What's your take on Pitocin?

Nesting before labor - pregnant woman

I know that I had an overwhelming desire to get the house "ready" for when I had the baby. This wasn't quite nesting, like you might think, as it occurred the entire pregnancy. Then I had a period of time where I was too tired, then too sick, then too worried about chemicals, then too big... I'm sure you understand.

So what does one do when trying to keep house and be pregnant at the same time?  You can turn to quick tips on house keeping like from the Housekeeping Guide or FlyLady. You can hire someone. You can talk your partner into helping you. Or you can suck it up and do it.

What's your advice?
