Lucky Seven at Birth

My daughter, Ada, turns seven today. Having had six previous children and five births (one set of twins), I thought I knew a thing or two about how I labored. Boy was I wrong!

Ada's labor proved to be much harder than I could have ever imagined. It was my shortest labor and probably one of my hardest labors. Her birth was a wild one. The story involves a mad dash in the car, a half naked husband and the air conditioner repair man. Here are the birth story and photos from the home birth of our baby we nicknamed, "Lucky Number Seven."

Ada's birth was a blur in some respects but something a certain air conditioner repair man will never, ever forget...

Did you have any crazy stories from your labor?

Scared to take a pregnancy test?

Pregnancy Test, Cake Pop, Hot Chocolate

I was answering my email the other day and someone wrote me to ask if I thought she was pregnant. I get many such emails every day, and my answer is usually the same, "If you think you're pregnant, take a pregnancy test." This woman wrote back quickly, "But I'm afraid to take a pregnancy test..."

That's when it struck me, aren't we all at some level afraid to take a pregnancy test? Whether you're looking for a positive or a negative, there is that place before you truly know the answer that the plastic test stick provides that allows you to be in your quiet, but happy place. It's a time where you can dream of the perfect pregnancy and lovely baby, or erase birth control failures and the like. That is, until you take that test. Then you are catapulted into reality, which is sometimes exactly what you had hoped and dreamed for and sometimes not.

How did you feel before you took your pregnancy test?

Daddy Catching New Baby

Move over cutting the cord! Dads have come a long way since the days of the waiting room. While women used to fight to have a significant other present, now the hospital doors have been flung open wide to accept others, albeit with some limits in some settings. One thing I'm seeing more of when I work as a doula in the hospital, is family members, like dad or partner, catching the baby.

I started seeing this at home births, in fact, it was a fairly common occurrence. I personally never thought it would fly in the hospital environment. (Though I've been working in hospital birth long enough so that I remember when every vaginal birth saw everyone draped and dressed!)Though I'm delighted to report that many of the hospitals and practitioners are doing this in my area.

The families who choose to do this are very happy and excited about their choices. Have you ever considered having someone assist your practitioner in catching the baby?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Breastfeeding and Exercise

Mom Jogging with New Baby in Stroller

A recent study looked at breastfeeding and exercise when it came to how infants grew. The study combined what was already out there and looked at whether or not there were effects on the growth of infants. While it's already known that babies who are breast fed grow differently than babies who are not breast fed, this looked at a mom's activity specifically.

This was a small look at moms and babies and they've proposed more studies, but given the fact that breastfeeding is good for babies and moms and exercise is good for moms, they believe it is completely appropriate to recommend that mothers engage in both, rather than to delay the return to exercise.

What are your plans to exercise after baby?

Newborn Baby

There is a myth out there that says only moms can have depression or blues related to being pregnant or having a baby. This simply isn't true. Science & Sensibility has some nice blog posts that talk about signs and symptoms in dads and consequences and support.

Alcoholic Drink

There has been a flurry of news articles written about alcohol in pregnancy after a study was released this past week on the topic of alcohol and pregnancy. While many news outlets are running headlines that say small amounts of alcohol are fine in pregnancy, that is not what the study says. In fact, the study actually says, "Furthermore, as no safe level of drinking during pregnancy has been established, the most conservative advice for women is not to drink alcohol during pregnancy."

So put down your wine glasses for a minute and consider this tweet warning from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists:

Drinking during pregnancy: the jury may be out for researchers, but ACOG recommends that pregnant women avoid alcohol

Given the potential risks associated with alcohol, you probably want to get advice from your midwife or doctor that you trust.  Make your decision based on their knowledge of you and your medical history and your comfortable level.  Let the news outlets have their say, but remember, at the end of the day, you wind up living with the potential consequences.

This is why it is so difficult to get good studies of risks on pregnant women. You can't randomly assign pregnant women to a group where they think there may be harm involved, like drinking or smoking.

Have you talked to your practitioner yet?
