Move over cutting the cord! Dads have come a long way since the days of the waiting room. While women used to fight to have a significant other present, now the hospital doors have been flung open wide to accept others, albeit with some limits in some settings. One thing I'm seeing more of when I work as a doula in the hospital, is family members, like dad or partner, catching the baby.
I started seeing this at home births, in fact, it was a fairly common occurrence. I personally never thought it would fly in the hospital environment. (Though I've been working in hospital birth long enough so that I remember when every vaginal birth saw everyone draped and dressed!)Though I'm delighted to report that many of the hospitals and practitioners are doing this in my area.
The families who choose to do this are very happy and excited about their choices. Have you ever considered having someone assist your practitioner in catching the baby?
