Why You Should Know the Cesarean Rates at Your Hospital Apr 11th 2013, 11:26 More and more research is showing us that having an unnecessary cesarean is more dangerous for mom and baby. The key here being the word unnecessary. That is the hard thing to define, both in labor and out. While new research has shown us that the cesarean rates are high and that intervention in labor is probably turned to too quickly, what they agree on is that your choice of practitioners is important. When you've chosen a practitioner, you might think that the work stops there, but many moms don't give consideration to where their practitioner works catching babies. Many hospitals have policies that may not be in line with what you are wanting and may not be on the radar of your midwife or doctor. One key statistic to know is what the cesarean rate is at your hospital. Jill of The Unnecesarean has been advocating for transparency in maternity care for a long time. A Baby Named Facebook Apr 6th 2013, 11:14 I will admit that I was only a bit surprised to hear that someone had named their baby Facebook.  So it wasn't to terribly surprising that Twitter is also a name. (Personally as baby names go, I have to admit, I think Twitter has more possibilities as a baby name.) At least one of the babies named Facebook has a story behind it, her Egyptian father says it's to honor the role that social media played in the Arab Spring. There are also babies named Google and Hashtag. So, let's not pick on baby names. But let's explore the name possibilities from social media: Pinterest (nickname Pinny) LinkIn (nickname Link) Reddit (nickname Red) What other names could you come up with that fit this category? Dealing with Pregnancy Insomnia Apr 5th 2013, 04:31 When you're pregnant and fatigue is a way of life, it can be down right cruel to be plagued with insomnia. Whether you have trouble falling asleep or trouble getting back to sleep in the middle of the night, there are a couple of things you can do to make it easier to fall asleep, rather than falling into some nasty habits. Be very leery of pulling out electronics. While it's temping to get on Facebook or Pinterest, rather than lulling you to sleep, your body becomes more stimulated by the light from the electronics. Don't toss and turn forever. If you're up and you can't get to sleep, consider something non-electronic to do for a bit. Consider reading a real book or magazine, or even writing a to do list. Some of the old wives tales like taking a warm bath and drinking warm milk may be helpful and are worth a try. Consider leaving your bedroom and laying down elsewhere. More than one mom-to-be has said that her fear of keeping her partner up was a huge factor in her physical discomfort. Sometimes it's okay to sleep on the couch. Fake Positive Pregnancy Test is Not Funny Apr 1st 2013, 00:30 It's April Fool's Day again and no doubt you've already started seeing the jokes flying.  One joke that makes its way around every year is the fake positive pregnancy test or false pregnancy announcement.  Now, I found out that my first baby was coming on April Fool's Day many years ago, I have even told that story before.  I hadn't really thought too much about the false announcements until the other night when a Twitter friend wrote that we should brace ourselves for these announcements today. All of a sudden it hit me, these announcements aren't funny.  They can be very hurtful to moms suffering from miscarriages or infertility.  Women were bracing themselves for a series of unfunny jokes.  So, if you're considering a false announcement, don't do it on Facebook for the world to see today.  Your joke might do worse than fall flat, it might really hurt someone's feelings. Happy Easter! Mar 31st 2013, 06:23 Happy Easter today to those who celebrate. When I saw the adorable photo above, I couldn't help but smile.  The site of the adorable baby chewing on the Easter basket filled with eggs is enough to make most curmudgeons smile. The egg has been a long time symbol of fertility. WIth spring being a season of rebirth overall, it's fitting to stop and mention this fact. One thing I always think about is that even though the moms who will give birth when the birth rates peak, August and September, found out months ago that they were expecting, they've been inside for the winter. As their bellies start to bloom and the sun starts to shine, spring always seems like there are pregnant women everywhere. Have you noticed this too? Even if you're not someone who has been pregnant awhile. you can still celebrate.  I even have some ideas for sharing your pregnancy news today - maybe you just got the Big Fat Positive (BFP) while I was typing this post!  Or maybe you're further down the road and giving birth today and need an Easter inspired baby name.
