Stupid Things People Say Sep 26th 2013, 10:55 Let's face it, there are a lot of judgmental people out there. Sometimes people don't even realize that what they are saying is being judgmental. They may believe that they are talking to you from a place of true concern. No matter what the reason behind it, women feel a lot of judgments from the comments from others about their choices in birth. I think we can all agree that having a baby is one of the hardest things that we will ever do in our lives, no matter how that baby enters the world. There is a lot of thought that goes into making decisions and worrying over every details, trying to do what's best for mom and baby. People truly do want to have a healthy mom, baby and birth. That said, it looks differently to different people. What is the right kind of birth for me, might be your nightmare and vice versa. Part of the reason is that when you are properly screened, you can hopefully catch complications early, which typically makes them easier to treat and can help to prevent bigger problems from arising. You play a large role in this in your pregnancy, even if you didn't realize it. One of the best things you can do to have a healthy pregnancy is to eat well, exercise and have open lines of communication with your midwife or physician. This means getting educated about some of the early warning signs of pregnancy complications and reporting them. That can sometimes mean asking the right questions. That said, may practitioners aren't always the best at letting you know what you should report and when. Many moms say that early pregnancy classes gave them a good dose of what to watch for and made the feel confident in calling to talk to their practitioners. Have you had to call your practitioner? Popular Culture Influences Baby Names Sep 22nd 2013, 22:18 Thinking of popular culture as a way to influence baby names and I'm sure non of use have to think to far into our friends and other circles to come up with someone who picked a baby name that was from a popular cultural reference. This can be true, even if a person isn't a fan of the celebrity or of the television show in question. As someone who loves data, I enjoy watching the baby name ranking from the Social Security office. These numbers go up once a year and are based on the previous year's birth certificate data. What's even more exciting is that you can track a name for many, many years backwards, including sorting it by gender. When you add the thought of the span of a television show, book or other popularity, it can be a really neat experiment. So I was talking about two show in particular this weekend with people and I wanted to know if the person's ascertainment was correct, that The Big Bang Theory and Grey's Anatomy had all greatly influenced baby names since going on the air. Rethinking the Diaper Bag Sep 18th 2013, 11:35 I will admit that when I first had a baby, I was younger and so into being a mom. My diaper bag screamed baby all over it. I only vaguely remember that it was pastel and had teddy bears or something on it, like my baby cared to look at it. Nowadays, that type of diaper bag is equated in my mind with t-shirts that say baby with an arrow pointing at a burgeoning belly. As I had more kids, I got more and more practical about my diaper bag preferences. I swapped looks cute with inside wipes out easily. I traded in sewn in changing pads for ones I could take out and move around to meet my needs. I craved space for my stuff, even just a little area tucked into a pocket inside, but a place where my keys and wallet would be (1) easily located and (2) not smelling of baby byproducts. I wish I had a timeline of my diaper bags, the evolution would be an interesting one. Though ultimately, it ended up as being a back pack that I simply added a few baby things to it. Basically the facts are, if you are a mom who is over-weight or obese and having a baby that is not your first, your risks don't really go up as much as previously thought. This is particularly true if you do not have another disease associated with obesity prior to pregnancy, like diabetes or high blood pressure. How do you get your exercise? Sep 13th 2013, 08:53 Pregnancy is a time many moms find exercise and other healthy practices. Exercise has been shown to provide you with so many benefits during pregnancy. Moms who get physical find that they sleep better, gain weight appropriately, have fewer aches and pains and can even have shorter labors. That sounds like a great plan, doesn't it? Who doesn't want those benefits? The problem is that pregnancy also comes with several things that tend to zap our energy and sometimes makes us feel like we're not feeling so great, particularly in terms of moving around. Some quick examples of that would be fatigue and morning sickness. The trick is to try to get small amounts of exercise, even when you're not feeling up to full workouts. Think about parking in the back of the parking lot versus searching for the closest spot. Try to take the stairs, even for a flight or two, as opposed to an elevator. Obviously, the more you do, the more benefit you get. What are you doing for exercise?
