Exposure to Toxic Chemicals in Pregnancy is Problematic Oct 4th 2013, 08:08 The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) released a joint statement talking about the risks of exposure to toxic chemicals when trying to get pregnant and in pregnancy. Citing sources that talk about the harm these materials can do to your body and fertility before pregnancy and those of your baby during pregnancy, they give a quick list of things you can do to try to limit exposure. This includes: Limit processed foods Avoid products with BPA Limit foods high in animal fats Avoid pesticides and solvents Wash fruits and vegetables Avoid fish with high mercury levels Given what I would expect form an announcement of this sort, it was a fairly simple sounding list. This makes it very practical for the average person to be able to have some control of what types of exposure you have in your every day life. That said, chemicals are around you every where. They are in your furniture, your clothes, and the items that you buy for your baby. It is impossible to completely avoid these environmental toxins, no matter how much you try. The goal here is reduction, and reduction in the way that you can get more bang for your buck. So consider how a toxin would enter your body, if you ingest it in food, it's in your body. If you slather it on your skin, it is absorbed. These may be the more intense routes of exposure and ones you should focus on. It is also important to know about chemicals and things that you may be exposed to while working. Be sure to talk to your boss or manager about any potential harmful substances. They are required to have a list of the chemicals and sheets called Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). You can also talk to your doctor or midwife about this issue. And, moving forward, keep in mind what products you purchase for your baby from clothing to bedding, even the paint on your walls and more. Vaginal Birth is Safe For Twins Oct 3rd 2013, 09:45 A new study out talks about the safety of vaginal birth for the vast majority of twins. The main criteria for safety is whether or not the baby closest to your cervix, known as Baby A, is head down. How often Baby A is head down is something most moms have no clue, but in this study in both the planned vaginal birth group and the planned cesarean group, Baby A was head down about 96-7% of the time. Having both babies head down, while nice, is not necessary for the safety of a vaginal birth, but that was over 60% of the time. This opens up a new look for many twin moms. One of the problems with having twins is the risks that are associated with it. Twin B, the baby furthest from the cervix, is the twin most likely to suffer if there is a problem at the time of birth. This study did confirm those findings, but found that it was the same in both groups, meaning that having a cesarean planned to protect Baby B would not be helpful. Given the added risks of cesarean birth for most healthy moms and babies it seems that a planned vaginal birth is still the clear choice for mothers who would prefer a vaginal birth. When I was having my twins, most of the twin mothers I met in class and at the high risk doctor's visits waiting room wanted to have a vaginal birth, but many felt forced into a cesarean birth. Women Prefer Staples After Cesarean Birth Sep 27th 2013, 09:27 There has been a long debate among moms, and sometimes their providers, about what is better looking after giving birth by cesarean in terms of the scar: staples or sutures. The word staples, makes many moms cringe at the thought. It brings up thoughts of Frankenstein's Monster, horrible scars, and desk staplers. On the flip side we tend to think of sutures as being fine needle work, often made with friendly sounding terms like silk, or numbered like DMC floss. A new study actually took about 60 women, half having their first c-section, and used both staples and sutures to close the incision after their cesarean. They waited six months postpartum and went back and asked the women which side they preferred, both in terms of looks and feeling (think pain and/or numbness). The stapled side was the preferred side. Interestingly enough, they were also looked at by two plastic surgeons. One surgeon had no preference and one overwhelmingly preferred the stapled side. There wasn't any quantifiable difference in pain. Did you have staples or sutures? How did that work for you? Stupid Things People Say Sep 26th 2013, 10:55 Let's face it, there are a lot of judgmental people out there. Sometimes people don't even realize that what they are saying is being judgmental. They may believe that they are talking to you from a place of true concern. No matter what the reason behind it, women feel a lot of judgments from the comments from others about their choices in birth. I think we can all agree that having a baby is one of the hardest things that we will ever do in our lives, no matter how that baby enters the world. There is a lot of thought that goes into making decisions and worrying over every details, trying to do what's best for mom and baby. People truly do want to have a healthy mom, baby and birth. That said, it looks differently to different people. What is the right kind of birth for me, might be your nightmare and vice versa.
