Cesarean Awareness Month

More and more research is showing us that having an unnecessary cesarean is more dangerous for mom and baby. The key here being the word unnecessary. That is the hard thing to define, both in labor and out. While new research has shown us that the cesarean rates are high and that intervention in labor is probably turned to too quickly, what they agree on is that your choice of practitioners is important.

When you've chosen a practitioner, you might think that the work stops there, but many moms don't give consideration to where their practitioner works catching babies. Many hospitals have policies that may not be in line with what you are wanting and may not be on the radar of your midwife or doctor. One key statistic to know is what the cesarean rate is at your hospital.

Jill of The Unnecesarean has been advocating for transparency in maternity care for a long time. Her dedication has lead her to create a new website that will help you figure out what the local cesareans rates are at facilities near you.  Please check out her new site and share this link: CesareanRates.com

Look at the hospitals in your area. How is the cesarean rate compared to other local hospitals? How is it compared to national cesarean rates? What questions can you ask your doctor or midwife about their personal cesarean rates?

National Public Health Week 2012

It's National Public Health Week this week and the theme is: A Healthier America Begins Today. In pregnancy this is so true, we are truly giving birth to the future.  This is why how we care for ourselves before, during and after pregnancy is so important.

I've often said that pregnancy is a time when many mothers first truly start thinking about health in a focused way. The baby is the reason that many mothers give for that change. So what can a mom do to stay healthy in pregnancy? Here's a quick list of the basics:

If you're able to, planning your pregnancy is even better.  While about half of all pregnancies are unplanned, giving yourself a few months head way on your health can make a huge difference in your health and your baby's health. Ask your midwife or doctor about a preconception visit.

What's the biggest health switch you've made in pregnancy or in planning for pregnancy?

Sad Woman

It's April Fool's Day again and no doubt you've already started seeing the jokes flying.  One joke that makes its way around every year is the fake positive pregnancy test or false pregnancy announcement.  Now, I found out that my first baby was coming on April Fool's Day many years ago, I have even told that story before.  I hadn't really thought too much about the false announcements until the other night when a Twitter friend wrote that we should brace ourselves for these announcements today.

All of a sudden it hit me, these announcements aren't funny.  They can be very hurtful to moms suffering from miscarriages or infertility.  Women were bracing themselves for a series of unfunny jokes.  So, if you're considering a false announcement, don't do it on Facebook for the world to see today.  Your joke might do worse than fall flat, it might really hurt someone's feelings.

Have you seen these false announcements?  What are your thoughts?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Labor Takes Longer Than It Did 50 Years Ago

Labor Takes Longer Than It Did 50 Years Ago

Couple Walking in Early Labor at the Hospital

A study just published looks at the length of labor now, compared to 50 years ago. There were the obvious things that we hear about more often, that moms are older and heavier, but these researchers said that even looking at those factors, labor was still longer. Their study showed that modern obstetrics has a lot to do with why labor is longer - including the use of epidural anesthesia which adds about 40-90 minutes on the average labor. They even postulated that with the use of Pitocin as rampant as it is in modern obstetrics, an increase in 19% over the 1960s, labor might be even longer than the what the study found: a first time mom has a 2.6 hour longer labor than her 1960s counterpart and that a mom who has previously had a baby will have about two additional hours of labor in modern times.

One of the things that they hope will come from the study is that common labor practices will change. Perhaps the timing for the decision of a cesarean section (c-section) could be outdated, as many cesareans happen prior to 6 centimeters dilation. Women may simply need more time to labor. When asked how women should use this information, one of the study authors said that he thought well informed patients might want to seek out practitioners who understand the differences in labor patterns in modern labor. This again confirms that the choice of your doctor or midwife is crucial to how your birth is likely to be.

They also said that moms who want natural birth may be comfortable waiting longer to getting Pitocin and other labor interventions assuming everything else is going well in labor. Time alone means little when looking at old labor patterns, like the Friedman Curve used in many hospitals.

How will this change your thoughts about the length of labor?

Chest Press for Pregnancy

One of the nice things about the chest press is that there are a variety of ways that you can do it. You can do it one at a time or alternating sides. What I like is using this as a great way to break up whatever I'm doing and make it exercise. This is great for when you're putting away the groceries - just insert a can of beans in place of the dumbbells and you're all set.

Which way will you do the chest press?
