Dad and Newborn

It was rather odd that I saw that question posted and discussed to death this weekend on Facebook as I had just read a study about how new mothers spend more time on Facebook after the birth of their baby. So the discussion went something like this: If someone is a new parent, particularly a mom, their Facebook page is likely to be taken over with baby photos and talk than anything else. The moms replied: duh. The study found that 44% of new moms spent more time on Facebook after baby than before.

This is something that I've talked about before from my personal point of view - Facebook was around at 3 a.m. when my baby was awake and I needed some adult time. I'd be up feeding or pumping and it was fall asleep while doing those activities or meander around Facebook. In fact, I know I posted, on more than one occasion, that I wished people would post more late at night to give me something to read in the wee hours of the day.

Now, from a professional point of view, I talked to other childbirth educators and doulas about watching client activity late at night. Did new moms post more?  Were they asking for help? Talking about how hard life was with a new baby?  I speculated that perhaps this was a new way to monitor some moms for signs of trouble, like postpartum depression. If we saw something, we could reach out and say, as an example, "I see you're posting that you are having trouble with breastfeeding. Can I help connect you to a professional?"

So as a mom or dad, what's your take on Facebook and baby updates?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Breastfeeding Support

Newborn hand

Wanting to breastfeed and being successful are two different thing unfortunately.  There are a lot of reasons why mothers don't breastfeed as long as they set out to breastfeed. I like what MD Mama, Dr. Claire McCarthy, had to say on that topic. Her information comes from a study being released in Pediatrics that talks about what policies and procedures may effect breastfeeding rates in the US. It has some pretty scary statistics, like 78% of breastfed babies are given formula supplementation in the hospital. (Have you read the Best for Babes' Booby Traps?)

One of the key issues that can sum up a lot of challenges new moms face with breastfeeding is support.  Support comes from a variety of places and in a variety of ways. This isn't just having a cheerleader, but having some other skills, people and knowledge in your repertoire. That's why I've spelled out some of the ways to prepare this before you have your baby.

What would you add to the list?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Quadriceps Stretch in Pregnancy

Quadriceps Stretch in Pregnancy

The quadriceps stretch can feel great at relieving tension in tight thighs in pregnancy. It's fairly simple to do and can really help loosen your muscles even before your exercise. One of the issues in pregnancy is the tendency for you to be too loose in the ligaments and tight in the muscles. Getting out and moving can help and stretching this large muscle group can help you warm up prior to other exercises like walking, running or swimming.

When do you do the quadriceps stretch?

My 9 Months March of Dimes

My 9 Months is a free app for the iPad from the March of Dimes. If you've seen the magazine they produce of the same name, you'll know the quality of the look, feel and information that they put into their work. You might want to check it out if you own an iPad.

That said, there are a ton of apps available for pregnancy and babies out there.  Some are great, some are funny and some are just down right odd.  What are your favorite apps for the iPhone, iPad and Android?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Epidural or nothing?

Epidural or nothing?

Labor Partner

Talking to moms about their options for pain relief usually yields me very similar answers: I did my homework and I chose an epidural. My next question is always, what else did you consider? The vast majority say nothing.

This always leaves me feeling a bit puzzled - how can you make a choice if you only have one option? One of the first times I had this conversation was with a good friend, who had her baby years before we met. I asked her what her thought process was going into pregnancy and birth surrounding pain medication for labor. She said, "I didn't want to writhe around, so I got an epidural." Before I could stop myself, the automatic thing out of my mouth was, "There are other options other than writhing or an epidural."

She honestly had never considered that thought. In her mind, there were women who had epidurals and women who didn't. It was as simple as that. No one had ever told her that she had choices, lots of them.

Do you know what all of your choices are when it comes to relieving labor pain?

About Pregnancy & Childbirth: Does timing sex to get pregnant cause men to stray?

Does timing sex to get pregnant cause men to stray?
Jun 2nd 2012, 11:21

I saw a post that said basically this the other day. I will admit to laughing out loud as I read it, but what really got me was that it was supposedly a study. After much searching I found the study in the Journal of Andrology, a real scientific journal. Before you freak out, there is a lot to be desired from this study, it's not as it appears to be.

  1. There were 439 men in the study, who were already being evaluated for fertility problems, not simply trying to conceive. This is not a huge and/or powerful number given the implications they are supposedly reporting.
  2. The researchers measured extra martial sex, new erectile dysfunction and soft drink intake. (If you read the study the soft drinks were about stress reduction.) This is a lot of variables to take in, particularly after all the blood work.
  3. Couples frequently abstained from sex except for the day of ovulation.

I could go on and on with questions I have about this study.  But here are the take aways that I do believe are valid:

  • Trying to get pregnant can be difficult and cause stress for both men and women.
  • Consider ways to make sex on O day feel less timed.
  • Every few months, skip a month or two of active trying.
  • Be spontaneous throughout your cycle.

What advice do you give to couples who have started trying to have a baby?

Side Stretch Twist in Pregnancy

After sitting in a chair all day, this is one exercise I could really use - the side stretch twist.  This gentle stretch can feel very powerful.  It's easy to do, even in your office chair.  (Though I recommend locking the wheels if you have them on your chair.) This can also help with round ligament pain if you're experiencing this side effect of pregnancy.

Do you think you'll enjoy the side stretch twist?
