Wanting to breastfeed and being successful are two different thing unfortunately.  There are a lot of reasons why mothers don't breastfeed as long as they set out to breastfeed. I like what MD Mama, Dr. Claire McCarthy, had to say on that topic. Her information comes from a study being released in Pediatrics that talks about what policies and procedures may effect breastfeeding rates in the US. It has some pretty scary statistics, like 78% of breastfed babies are given formula supplementation in the hospital. (Have you read the Best for Babes' Booby Traps?)

One of the key issues that can sum up a lot of challenges new moms face with breastfeeding is support.  Support comes from a variety of places and in a variety of ways. This isn't just having a cheerleader, but having some other skills, people and knowledge in your repertoire. That's why I've spelled out some of the ways to prepare this before you have your baby.

What would you add to the list?
