Affordable Care Act and Maternity Care Jun 29th 2012, 09:13 With the Supreme Court upholding the Affordable Care Act (ACA) yesterday, there are numerous provision that will alter the care for women in pregnancy and beyond.  Some of the big ones include that pre-exisiting conditions that are currently used against women, like a previous cesarean birth and being a victim of domestic violence, can't be used against them; extended coverage under medicaid for low and moderate income women to get basic maternity care; smoking cessation programs for pregnant women; expanded nurse midwifery payment; and others.  Here are some places to find out more about how ACA will change coverage in pregnancy: US Health Care Reform Offers Benefits to Pregnant Women from Childbirth Connection Workplace Support in Federal Law (for Breastfeeding) from the US Breastfeeding Committee Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act from the American College of Nurse Midwifery ACOG Applauds Supreme Court from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists It is also important to note that while some of these provisions have already taken effect, others will not go into effect until 2014.
